A Win for Women

Posted by SarahMC in Thoughts, Pay disparity, Politics, Sexism on Jan 30, 2009, 9:30am | 6 comments

Jill at Feministe brings us this study in contrasts.

Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003

Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009

Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009

What a difference an administration makes. While the argument can be made that increased female representation in the US Senate and House will not necessarily lead to increased women’s rights (two words: Michele Bachman), it is important to increase our ranks – the four female Republican senators all voted for the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Chances are good that female lawmakers have personally experienced sexism in the workplace, regardless of party affiliation. We need more women who’ve been there (wherever “there” is) to represent us in the halls of power.

You know, I want to focus on the heartwarming picture below it, but that first picture is some truly gruesome Handmaid’s Tale bone-chilling fucked-up shit.

That top picture is going to give me nightmares. Seriously. I will now have to worry about Zombie Bush risen from the political dead to try and nosh on our hope-infected brains.

I have no words to describe the fury induced by the first photo. And, yo, I love Obama and volunteered for him and all, but how cool would the contrast have been if that second pic had a woman president signing the law?

The first thing I thought about when I saw the Ledbetter signing was that Partial Birth Abortion ban signing.

    Night and Day.

Guckt mal hier. [...]
