I love that speech. She was an awesome woman. We read that speech in Women’s Literature, and along with it came the anecdote of when she was accused of being a cross-dressing man, and in a tense emotional moment, she exposed her breast for all to see.

I LOVE that speech. Read it for the first time last semester as a reading for Intro to Women and Gender Studies, as a reading on ‘Body and Representation’. So inspirational, and so true.

Just reading the phrase “She was separated from her family as a child, and was sold several times” sends shivers down my spine. That is overcoming true adversity.

Somehow I made it all the way through school (in the South, go figure) without ever reading that “Ain’t I a Woman” speech — until today, and the speech is AWESOME. Thanks for this post.
