Do You Want to Fight Chris Brown?

Posted by BeckySharper in Thoughts, Add new tag, Anger, Assweasels, Domestic violence, Unexpected Consequences on Feb 21, 2009, 8:00am | 15 comments

So there’s a new Facebook group called “I WANT TO FIGHT CHRIS BROWN”, set up as part publicity stunt/part public shaming by Anthony Geisler, president of the martial arts center LA Boxing.  He was apparently as unpersuaded by Brown’s fauxpology as my harpy sister PhDork. The page says:

“In light of recent reports regarding Chris Brown’s attack on Rihanna, Anthony Geisler, President of LA Boxing (www.laboxing.com), is challenging Mr. Brown to step into the ring against him and see what it’s like to face a real opponent. If you’d like to be next in line, join us here!”

The page also links to TMZ’s photos of Rihanna’s bruised and swollen face, which are heartbreaking. The group had close to 4,000 members on February 20th, as well as 700+ wall posts baying for old-school retribution. There’s also a pro-Chris discussion thread charmingly entitled “yall stupid asses done even know.” I chose not to noodle around in there too long, and I don’t think you should either, especially if you suffer from high blood pressure.

A plea for non-violence can be found on the Facebook page of the group “PEOPLE AGAINST THE GROUP ‘I WANT TO FIGHT CHRIS BROWN.’” Its page reads:

Agreeing that there is NEVER a reason to lay your hands on a woman, I disagree with the group “I want to fight Chris Brown.” There would be nothing productive in a fight of this kind.”

Hmm…My head tells me that the justice system can and should take care of Chris Brown. It also tells me that Chris has probably been the innocent victim of abuse himself–he claims, credibly, that his stepfather beat both him and his mother when he was growing up–and heaping more beatings on him isn’t really the answer. My heart, unsurprisingly, is full of rage, which makes me want to whoop his ass myself, and then move on to every other abuser I could get my hands on.

I’m not going to join either group. But Chris, you should be very glad you’re not my boyfriend. Here’s why:

Yes, this is really me.

Yes, this is really me.

People made a group for the expressed purpose of opposing “I WANT TO FIGHT CHRIS BROWN?”
Something tells me they weren’t moved to create groups in opposition to the dozens of PRO-Chris Brown, “DV is hilarious,” bitch got what she deserved groups that have popped up.

Omigosh! As a former victim of domestic abuse, I’m so appalled by the whole blame-the-victim thing. My ex was so abusive that, when it ended, everyone I knew was like “wow, I’m SO glad he’s gone,” but I had no idea. And then his brother murdered his wife. Which, in my opinion, means these things can only escalate. Chris Brown needs psychotherapy, jail time, and a reality check — not a public brawl…

If given the chance, I think that I would want to fight Chris Brown. It would probably not go well, as I have no fighting skills, but I’ve had a bad week, so the idea of throwing a few punches is highly appealing at the moment. I’ll probably stick to beating the shit out of a pillow or going for a run, though. Seems like a much better plan.

“Yall Stupid Asses Done Even Know” should be a category, I think. Or maybe an award, given to those who respond to indefensible behavior with profoundly stupid and desperately defensive flailings.

You can bust some heads, Becky; I took judo, which is not so much about ass-kicking. I must be content to mock him into air and press him to death with wit.

I am taking up meditation to deal with my feminist anger, but I admit this looks like more fun.

@PhDork: I did judo in college. Not much punching and kicking, but it’s very useful should one need to choke a bitch.

@PSoul: I’d take martial arts over meditation any day; they are actually quite a calming outlet for existential rage. Being able to punch, kick and break things in karate class was the only thing that kept me from killing my first boss.

No, I do not want to fight Chris brown. I don’t care either. If it weren’t Rihanna no one would give a damn. I do, however, want to know more girls learn how to fight and defend themselves. TI would make a world of difference in DV if more ppl know how to kick behind.

One of them pulled out the “women are more likely to abuse” card with the misrepresented statistic. I love how they put this along side victim blaming. What is that fishy smell? I think it’s a red herring.

I am not interested in fighting him either. However, I would very much like to have the opportunity to speak some serious shrill to him. If he then thinks that the appropriate response to a woman speaking some shrill is to take a swing, I would be delighted to dance him down.

@Becky: I’m a pacifist. So I try to meditate away ragey impulses.

I agree Asada. When this story first broke I just couldn’t muster up any rage and I still can’t. If this had been a fight between two women it would’ve been called a cat fight and been a salacious story. If this had been a fight between two men it would’ve been called a brawl and with people trying to find out who won.
Domestic violence will not stop until we take all types of violence seriously.
