I Could Not Be Less Surprised

Posted by SarahMC in Thoughts, Abortion, Busybodies, Women's Health on Mar 19, 2009, 8:00am | 14 comments

Oh, Florida. Your Republican concern trolls are concerned. And so, the House approved a bill that would require women to get an ultrasound before they can get an abortion during the first trimester.

They already require people to look at x-rays before they can get broken bones treated, and to examine their CT scans before they’re allowed to get tumors removed. Naw, just kidding.

Do they ever consider that maybe if they do this the woman will be even MORE likely to abort? Because I have had more than unexpectedly pregnant friend whose first thought was “OMFG getitoutgetitoutgetitout!” Actually SEEING what was inside them would have only made them shriek that line at the top of their lungs.

But how else will a woman know that the speck or blob in her uterus is a baybee? What, you think your average woman knows what abortion is really for? C’mon now…

    /vomitous sarcasm

Can’t the insurance lobby make themselves useful for once and block this for inefficiency?

@Becky, I’m pretty sure that would be my first response, too! I’m fairly freaked out by the idea of something living in my uterus even in theory.

I think this is good! The last time I went in for an abortion, it turned out that my fetus was just a food baby after eating way too many Big Macs. I never would have known if not for the ultrasound! Thank you, conservative whackadoos!

@jd: Good point. It has no medical benefit. Who pays for it?

I thought an ultrasound to determine how far along a pregnancy had progressed was standard? Because before a certain point you can still choose the pill instead of the procedure? Or is this the law that wants to make women LOOK AT their ultrasound? I sure am questiony this morning.

    @jd: answer: no.

I am so disgusted by this nasty little “trend”

Ultrasounds are standard, because as you say, Blongegrlz, they need to determine how far along the woman is. These laws require women to look.
LOOK AT THE BABY, WITH FINGERNAILS, YOU’RE ABOUT TO MURDER!
Ohhhhh, so you’re telling me I’m pregnant with a human fetus. That changes everything.

Many thanks to the abortion clinic staff who will guide women through this (and every other legal hoop we have to jump through) with grace and understanding they show daily at levels which can only be described as inhuman.

So the law is that they need to LOOK at it? How can they legislate something like that? Not to mention, first-trimester ultrasound images do not look like babies. They look like blobs.

@Spark: It’s ridiculous. My first ultrasounds when I was pregnant were, uh, not human-looking. I worried I was carrying an alien.

They’re attempting this in Kansas, too. I sent an angry e-mail to my senator, but I guess he didn’t listen. Ugh. I hate this.

I live in Florida…most clinics already used ultrasounds before the procedure, but they don’t make you look/listen to them.

@Spark, you’re right, they do look like blobs first trimester. My boyfriend described mine (he chanced a look) as looking like a kidney bean.
