My mother used to say to me and my sister “Never rely on a man for money” when we were growing up. We laughed, not really old enough to understand what she was saying to us. She saw her own mother unable to leave my abusive, unstable grandfather because there were no financial resources to do so for her own self, let alone take care of my mother and her three siblings. My grandma is now almost 84 and has no independent savings and has to rely on her husband’s pension and her children’s support. This is what my mother was talking about

How many families can afford to have one spouse stay home in the first place? We talk about praising the SAHM but ensure that she pays a financial price to follow the “path of her uterus”. Being dependent on anyone financially makes you vulnerable, period. While I respect the choices of all women I think we need to examine the results of our choices clearly. It is not just short term poverty that occurs when one stays home a significant gap in employment can and does effect ones financial status right through retirement. There is a reason why elderly women are one of the poorest segments of our society.

OH RIGHT. NEVER. Because I don’t want people (whatever their gender) to act out of guilt. That Schlessy does makes me ill. Of course, she’s also confused about the definition of “feeling” since I’m pretty sure guilt/”I should” qualifies at least as much as “I don’t wanna.”

Who is buying this woman’s books? Who keeps giving her a platform to spew her stupidity-fueled hatred? (or is it hatred-fueled stupidity?)
