I’m particularly pissy about Schlafly because we each have earned at least one degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and last year, the Trustees of that fine institution decided to bestow an honorary doctorate upon her, despite general uproar from faculty, students, and alumnae/i like me, to:
[recognize] an alumna of the University whose life and work have had a broad impact on American life and have sparked widespread debate and controversies that in many cases have helped people better formulate and articulate their own views about the values they hold.
Why am I busting my ass writing a dissertation, when all it takes to get a PhD is to bray the same tired, hate-filled patriarchal bullshit for 40 years? Oh right, I remember…two reasons: a) because I’m not basing my life’s work on the disenfranchisement of half of humanity (except if they are me, the rest of you “inferior” XX-types can hang!), and b) because my degree won’t be FAKE.
Aaaaanyway, Schlafly, now 84 but no more wise for all her years, has decided that the world needs more of her bon mots about feminism, and she’s favored Time Magazine with them.
There’s just huge, steaming piles of noxious crap contained herein, but of course, the latest bugbear of the ultra-right is gay marriage (but they’re starting to see which way the wind blows, thanks to recent events in Iowa and Vermont), but not content to gay-bash, Schlafly makes it clear who the real enemy is, and always has been: feminists.
My own belief is that the problem [facing] marriage is maybe only 5% a problem with gay activism, and 95% a problem with feminist activism. [Feminists] have given us divorce, millions of fatherless children and the idea that it’s O.K. to be a single mom.
Lest we forget: feminists are to blame for divorce, men’s abdication of fatherhood, and women’s silly ideas about self-sufficiency. (Also: bus crashes.) It’s amazing how much power we have. Nothing bad existed before NOW. Or was that Seneca Falls? Or maybe Mary Wollstonecraft? (I can never remember.)
But wait, there’s more idiocy:
The feminist movement is not about success for women. It is about treating women as victims and about telling women that you can’t succeed because society is unfair to you, and I think that’s a very unfortunate idea to put in the minds of young women because I believe women can do whatever they want. Feminists don’t honor successful women.
Got that, girls? We’re not blogging about crappy, offensive advertising, legal matters, and political and cultural events of interest and/or concern because we like women, value women–are women–and want us all to be successful. Nope! And we’ve never honored successful women! We’re just tryin’ to brang y’all down! Last I checked, Schlafly is herself a woman, and yet would deny herself the right to do “whatever she wants” if what she wants is an abortion, or equal pay, or the right to walk about the world freely.
She’s not fooling anybody, and yet she just keeps writing her fool head off, ending with juicy, low-hanging fruit like this:
Well, I guess the next cause is to keep Obama from taking this country into socialism — which means the government running everything, which means having everybody believe that the government can solve their problems. And of course I grew up during the Depression. We didn’t have any of the handouts and we grew up to be the greatest generation.
Obama is a Socialist! (I would dearly, dearly love to sit down with the Schlaf and talk to her about what socialism is). There were no social programs (“handouts”) during/after the Great Depression! I’m guessing the Time people edited out the last sentence, which discussed the flatness of the earth and the greatness of scientology.
Mrs. Schlafly, please. Your time is up.
*”By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don’t think you can call it rape.” Other priceless and recent woman-hatery can be found here.
P.S. For those midwesterners who love the beer of same name; drink in peace, my friends; Phyllis has nothing to do with that nectar, it was co-founded by her nephew Tom.
