We had beautiful weather in NYC yesterday, but today?
A STORM IS GATHERING!!!
Yep, Nation for Marriage (NOM) is going to have to step up their feeble, poorly-produced efforts if they really want to keep same-sex marriage from becoming a nation-wide reality.
Because The New York Times is reporting today that Governor David Paterson will announce on Thursday his intent to introduce legislation on legalizing same-sex marriage in the state of New York.
This is admittedly just the beginning of what might be a rather attenuated battle, and while there is no guarantee that it will pass, I am hopeful. With recent victories in Iowa and Vermont, momentum is building–and for once, it’s moving in the right direction.
Whatever happens, it is heartening that the Governor is knowingly making a statement about the necessity of equal treatment under the law for same-sex couples. I don’t think there’s any going back on this matter, and I’m thrilled. Makes me want to run out and dance in the rain.

Woohoo!
(and maybe Patterson is slightly less of a useless assclown than the past few months would lead me to believe)
Also, that Gathering Storm ad reminds me of this:

Dogs and cats, living together!
“The gathering storm” makes me think of Sauron marshaling the armies of Mordor. Which kind of describes my feelings towards homophobes, actually.
Just as a side note:
If you are talking to someone who says that gay marriage affects them because their children will be taught it is okay in school, tell them this: Every public school has to teach it’s state standards (which are usually based on National Standards). Ask the person to show you the standard that mentions marriage of any type. I’m sure they won’t be able to since, I have yet to see a standard that specifically mentions marriage (I used to be a teacher and am not editing high school text books). Schools are not required to teach anything about marriage (gay or straight). If a teacher does teach their students about gay marriage, the parent has the right to complain and place their child in another teacher’s class (just like they do now).
You probably won’t get convince the person you are talking to, but it should be clear to the people listening that “my child will be taught that something I believe is a sin is okay” is just a scare tatic not based in any truth.
Good to know, Alyssa. Thanks!
Good point, Alyssa. It is not appropriate for marriage–gay or otherwise–to be “taught” in school. If that kind of religious morality is important to parents, they should send their kids to parochial school.
Whoops… correction: not editing was supposed to be now editing…

It’s worth mentioning that New York had some more news today when it welcomed the new Cardinal for New York City, Timothy Dolan. I bring this up because he commented on gay marriage (and abortion) by saying that “We don’t take our cue from the whims and the trends of today.” Ah, equal rights and reproductive rights, those tired trends and idiotic whims of the modern folk!
Yeah, I couldn’t ignore Dolan if I tried (and seriously, I tried). Meet the New Boss, same as the Old Boss.
