I never saw so many emotional appeals from conservatives to "please understand and stop calling us bigoted" as I did in the wake of the Prop 8 disaster. It made me unspeakably angry to hear these pleas from acquaintances whose feelings were hurt by all the people calling them homophobic- why couldn't everyone understand and stop calling them names, just for defending their beliefs? I wished there was an ounce of self-reflection in those appeals. Please understand YOU? How about a shred of understanding for the people who've suffered far worse name-calling, and still had their civil rights violated?

From a friend now abed in England:

this is what one poet said of oscar wilde during his trial:
'Tis a shame to human nature, such a head of hair as his.
in the good old time 'twas hanging for the colour that it is;
Though hanging isn't bad enough and flaying would be fair
For the nameless and abmoninable colour of his hair.

Oh and a deal of pains he's taken and a pretty price he's paid
To hide his poll or dye it of a mentionable shade
but they've pulled the beggar's hat off for the world to see and stare,
And they're taking him to justice for the colour of his hair.

Now 'tis oakum for his fingers and the treadmill for his feet,
And the quarry gang on portland in the cold and in the heat
And between his spells of labour in the time he has to spare
He can curse the God that made him for the colour of his hair.

@baraqiel: Yup, because no conservative ever gets divorced or has infidelities. That never, ever happens. Just ask Gingrich!

No, I've spoken to many conservatives who are absolutely, totally convinced that marriage has been exactly as portrayed in Leave it to Beaver for millenia. The dearth of actual knowledge of historical fact is staggering.

I mean, have you read this guy's other columns? Some choice quotes:
-"It is undeniable that the U.S. elite media...skews to the left." Arguably he's talking about left of libertarianism, since what he then proceeds to argue is that mainstream conservative columnists are still in favor of big government, but still, I don't think he has an concept of how far any major political position in this country is from "left". After all, no one's arguing for socialism any more.
-Michelle Bachman "provokes the wrath of liberals who cannot stand to see an attractive woman stand up for what have come to be known as traditional values". Yeah, because everyone knows that liberals regard it as a huge blow whenever someone hot isn't on our side. Ugly people, though, they're free to vote Republican as much as they want.
-"Nothing she has said is any crazier than the idea that the federal government can tax, spend and borrow America's way back to economic prosperity." Well, since another world war doesn't seem forthcoming...

Ah yes, us poor confused liberals who rely on thinking and logic instead of traditions. If they were REALLY all about traditional marriage, women would still legally belong to their husbands, marital rape would be legal, arranged marriages would be the norm, and women would get married in their teens to old dudes for money and houses. I suppose I shouldn't give them any ideas though; I'll bet some conservatives really DO want marriage to be like that.

This opposition to gay marriage though isn't tradition, it's homophobia. Do they really think we can't see that?

I think Glenallen Walker feels like he doesn't need to justify his positions with logic, because he's playing conservative ambassador to us poor, confused liberals.

At least he was fairly upfront with this part: "conservatives, as a general rule, have an interest in conserving...traditions". In other words, conservatives (at least, the ones that vote based on "values" and not based on how much they can fuck over others for profit) are deathly afraid of any perceived change to the status quo no matter what it is.

See, when I have to write out my thoughts about something in an essay, it often forces me to clarify them and allows me to spot the logical inconsistencies. If my thoughts congeal into a heaping mass of bullshit upon wrangling them into paragraphs, it's a PROBLEM. Perhaps poor Glenallen Walker missed that day in school?

And bellacooker! I'm offended! I happen to love my baked potato very much. How dare you insult our union :( If two consenting human beings can get married, WHY OH WHY can I not marry a roasted vegetable? It's basically the same, right?
