At least he was fairly upfront with this part: “conservatives, as a general rule, have an interest in conserving…traditions”. In other words, conservatives (at least, the ones that vote based on “values” and not based on how much they can fuck over others for profit) are deathly afraid of any perceived change to the status quo no matter what it is.
