After holding back the burgeoning tide of The Future of Cinema for a couple of years, I finally started a subscription to Netflix about a month back (yeah, yeah, I’m a Luddite. Who blogs.). I’ve been enjoying the “Play Now” British sit-coms and high-brow documentaries, but one of the first discs I had sent to me was 1989′s The Tall Guy, starring Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson.
Not only does this romantic comedy have two actors I find attractive and funny and all-around appealling, it includes plenty of silly British humor, scenes from a (fabricated) musical of The Elephant Man–called Elephant!, natch–AND my favorite sex scene of alllllllll cinematic time. I looked on YouTube for it, but no luck. Probably ’cause of the nudity.
Though I don’t want to give away the details of the scene and thereby rob you of the pleasure of surprise, I will say that it is bold and funny, and to me, very sexy, although maybe not exactly “erotic.” And it involves oranges and a piano. And Jeff Goldblum. Ahem. The film itself is far from perfect, but I love it for its silliness, and its embrace of sexuality (especially women’s) that is warm and frank, but not exploitative.
The Dude is out of town this weekend, and I’m going to be Netflixing it up. What’s your favorite (non-porn, plz) movie sex scene?

Anything from A Walk on the Moon. Also, the scenes in the otherwise horrible A Perfect Murder. The 69 scene in A History of Violence. I swear it is a coincidence that these all have Viggo Mortensen.
I just want to say I love when Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio are making out in the pool in Romeo + Juliet.
The sex scene from Enemy at the Gates, where they are filthy, trying to manage it without getting undressed in a room full of their fellow Soviet soldiers.
It is unbelievably hot.
I second the love for Leo in the pool in Romeo + Juliet. Loved it at 16, still love it after all these years.
Oddly enough, the first sex scene that really stands out in my mind is the one with Naomi Watts and Laura Harring in Mulholland Drive. And I’m straight, so…yeah. Whatever that means!
Ooh, and the scene w/ Buffy and Spike where they’re going at it while the house falls down around them…totally hot (especially for network TV).
No question two scenes involving Bogart and Bacall – the horse racing discussion in The Big Sleep and the ‘you know how to whistle’ scene in To Have and Have Not’. I find both sexier than any depiction of sex in the movies.
Although if i have to pick a sex scene then the Dennis Quaid/Ellen Barkin scene from The Big Easy isn’t bad.
the makeout scene at the garage in Some Kind of Wonderful (Netflix it!) is still the hottest thing I have ever seen.
Mmm, yeah, Viggo in History of Violence. I’ll second that one. And, prolly not very original, but I do like the sex scene of Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth in Shakespeare in love.
I second Kivrin in Buffy and Spike while the house falls down. I also liked it when he came up behind her on the balcony at the Bronze and they Did It right there.
Love Henry and June… but that’s NC-17, so perhaps too close to porn? (I know there’s a lot that’s problematic with the story too.)
Sometimes I find the L Word very sexy, but mostly the ridiculousness of the sex scenes make me laugh.
I liked Sookie and Bill’s first time in True Blood. So over-the-top — she runs out and meets him in the woods in a Gothic heroine nightgown, and they end up in front of a fireplace. But I thought it was very sensual and yet caring.
you guys this is so deeply embarassing that I didn’t even want to admit it at first but I also like the scene where Brad Pitt loses his virginity to Claire Forlani (who I can’t stand, for the record, though it’s probably Kevin Smith’s fault) in Meet Joe Black. Although the rest of the movie is totally unwatchable.
Two from Secretary: the scenes where Lee goes through various states of bondage with Mr. Grey, like having her arms in a spreader and still making him coffee or when she’s at home and he tells her what she can eat, like a scoop of potatoes and 4 peas. And without being super spoilery, the one at the end where she’s tied to a tree. (For those who haven’t seen it, its not as anti-feminist as those sentences make it sound. Its actually quite empowering, as its about Lee finding a love that works for her. I had just reread what I’d written and realized how bad it sounded. >.>;;)
I second everything SOALG said about Viggo scenes. And the library scene from Atonement, which is so hot and SO intense.
Also, this isn’t even explicit, but I find the scene in Chocolat when Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche are dancing to Caravan to be incredibly sexy.
I have to agree with Mireille on Shakespeare in Love.
Also, I love the scene at the beginning of the second Matrix movie when they arrive back in Zion and Trinity and Neo go at it while the party is going on. Something about the thumping music
I can’t recall specifics as I haven’t seen either film for years but I definitely had some kind of response to Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in “Heathers” and Geena Davis and Brad Pitt in “Thelma and Louise”.
Favourite recent scenes: Julie Delpy and Adam Goldberg in “2 Days in Paris”, just for their honesty and genuine approximation of it actually feels like to be in bed with someone!
Oh my, young Jeff Goldblum. That’s always nice.
Favorite sex scene? Why, the very last scene from Keaton’s “Sherlock, Jr.” of course. *deadpan*
The end of Bull Durham. In the bath, on the kitchen counter, on the floor…goddamn.
Cold Mountain, man. Something about rough men in cabins.
@mydishonestheart: Seconded. Secretary is one of my favorite movies EVAR.
yes to A Walk on the Moon. So fucking hot.
also I totally agree about the makeout scene in Some Kind of Wonderful
Aaaand to take it way back, I loved the sex scene in The Big Easy. Dennis Quaid was so sexy.
Lurve the Tall Guy! I think it’s my second fave Richard Curtis movie, after Love Actually.
Like Kivrin and magda, I also love the Spike and Buffy scene with the falling down house. Love me some Spike… I also dig the Rene Russo & Pierce Brosnan bit in Thomas Crown, just for representing Hollywood ‘old’ folk. Hot.
