and they say “Virginia is for Lovers”, then that cannot be right because that was the state that locked them up; why because they were in love and got married. then I don’t want to be part of that kind of state. This was a real love story. Oh God Bless them as they rest in peace.

I only heard about this brave wonderful couple about 2 weeks ago when the folk singer Nanci Griffiths was a guest on a morning TV show and she sang “The Loving Kind”. I purchased the song from Itunes and downloaded it. It is a beautiful song sung by a lovely lady. I then researched the story. I wish I had had heard about them many years ago.

Wow- I didn’t realize that the cops would actually be sent in to break up interracial marriages. I assumed that you would be denied a marriage certificate and could live together “in sin” and the neighbors would make your life hell, but I didn’t know that the police would bust down your door. What the hell?! The Lovings were damned brave.

Oh wow. I also got all faklempt about this post. It is also nice and timely, since I just this morning had a discussion with my boyfriend (I’m Canadian, he’s American, living in Canada) about gay marriage. We’re both pro-gay-rights, but he tends to be an apologist for the many people who “just aren’t comfortable with it or who just think it’s wrong,” which drives me batty. Mildred Loving’s 2008 statement constitutes an almost-perfect rebuttal.

Mildred Loving is one of my personal heroines. I am a white woman married to a black man. Knowing that fifty years ago our union would’ve been illegal due to ignorance and hate is part of what makes me such a strong supporter of marriage equality activism today.

I’d like to echo that I’m all teary now, too. What a strong and righteous and eloquent woman! I can’t imagine having to suffer exile from my hometown and state and extended family just to be with the person I love.

@Becky: I could be remembering this wrong, but I think Olbermann cited the Lovings when he did his special comment after Prop 8 was passed. Either way, she is truly a perfect pick for our little Hall of Fame.
