Alas.
You already know that two of our Harpies have flown the nest for a week or so. Of the three remaining, another two of us have serious professional commitments breathing down our necks (making us even more jealous of Becky Sharper and SarahMC), and it’s the kick-off to summah!, so posting may be a little light ’round these parts for the next few days.
I’m going to try to get a little socializin’ in this weekend with some visiting friends, but I’ll probably spend a stupid amount of time right in front of my laptop, working on an essay for an edited collection due next week. No vegetarian picnics or backyard barbecues for this Dork!
Feel free to gloat about your plans in comments…

I am chillaxin’ with a friend tomorrow, but I’m keeping it pretty low-key for the rest of the long weekend. My favorite summer holidays are the ones I get to spend indoors and in the sweet, air-conditioned shade.
Froofy little colorful drinks may be involved.
no vacations for me…but everybody please make sure to have just a little extra fun for me wherever you are.
As a fellow PhD student, my plans for this weekend include working on my dissertation (defense in 5-ish weeks!), sleeping, and cleaning.
I will gloat in July when this mess is over.
I start grad school in the fall so I’m trying to make this the Best Summer Ever before I disappear back into the books. Besides having shows with visiting bands (and trying to figure out how to do my music live myself) and hosting visiting friends, I’m going to St. Louis to see a Women’s Professional League game (hopefully with my soccer-playing niece) and Chicago just to hang around. I already went to Madison, WI and Chicago on a roadtrip/tour this year…
But I also haven’t had a real vacation since 2005, so don’t envy me too much.
No vacation yet for me, first an essay-from-hell to finish
But sailing on Sunday, and a weekendtrip in two weeks.
If I could just finish this essay I would be perfectly happy, even withóut a vacation…
I’m moving back home to live with my parents in the middle of nowhere. I’ve been essentially unemployed since February and don’t have any money to live on my own anymore. Don’t all the rest of you get jealous of my big weekend plans now!
Finals and papers are coming up, but I am irresponsible and so I will spend all day tomorrow playing a fantasy adventure card game at a competitive event, then baking brownies or cookies or pie (haven’t decided, who knows, I might get wild and do cupcakes) Sunday for a barbecue Monday. I might study. If so, I’ll be poring over case law and revising a paper proposal.
I am in the middle of working a 24-day stretch with no day off. Stupid two jobs. You will hear no gloating from me.
I think it’s funny how only people without vacation reply
– maybe the people with the awesome cool plans don’t dare to reply anymore?
I wouldn’t get too jealous. We’re spending most of the weekend with my parents, to be there in case dad falls down. Personally, I’m going to be spending a whole lotta time stoned on the couch – I have a lovely sprained back/sinus infection combo.
Flying to Boston after work today to support bf’s comic book sales at an anime convention. Possibly visitations with old friends and bf’s family. General supportive gf duties, etc etc.
I get a glamorous vacation in New Jersey! TOP THAT BISHEZ!
hanging around brooklyn doing very little as per every weekend to be fair. There will probably be a trip to the playground at some point (don’t all rush to join me now) and quite possibly some time spent watching other people drink lots while I scratch my itchy pregnant stomach and dream of deliverance. On the other hand I will read lots. But I read lots every day of the week so….
I just want to say that when I was standing in Victoria Station in a fog of jet lag at 8 AM this morning, I was gazing at the big Departures board and right next to my destination listing was one for a town in SE England called DORKING. And I thought of you, dear PhDork!
That’s almost as good an English place name as Titty Ho and Cockfosters.
oh Becky, don’t mock Dorking, it’s a nice little retirement town in Surrey. Then again my parents live near Lower Slaughter so I am not probably the best judge.
Well, now I know where I’m retiring…not Cockfosters.
Dangermouse: 5 weeks! You can do it!!! GO GO GO!
waxghost: Awwww, StLou. If you’ve got time, take your niece to the City Museum and hit South Grand for Vietnamese food for me.
Dutchie and kithkin: Word Power Triplets, ACTIVATE! Here’s to productivity. (p.s. red wine is good for writer’ block)
Krae: Good luck with the move and all the rest. I am newly jobless myself and I am feeling. it. (p.s. red wine is good for unemployment)
Visiting my SO in Japan for a week.
(I live in the US.)
My swinging plans for this weekend include vicodin and flexaril – I tore my back up last week.
