Doth Mine Eyes Deceive Me?

Posted by SarahMC in Harpy Shout-out, Abortion, Reproductive rights, The Media, Women's Health on Jun 2, 2009, 1:16pm | 10 comments

Please bear with me as I struggle to focus on any pressing issues facing women besides the murder of Dr. Tiller. But thumbs-up to the New York Times for this editorial, in which Tiller’s slaying is rightly described as terrorism. Additionally, instead of using the label “pro-life,” they actually call anti-abortion restrictions “anti-choice.”

This may make up for Ross Douthat. Maybe.

that’s nice to see, for a little while I thought Olberman and Maddow were going to be the only ones in the media to call it what it was.

I’ve been having trouble with people calling him an “abortionist” and an “abortion doctor.” Even if that was the bulk of this gentleman’s practice, wasn’t he an ob/gyn?

bellacoker, yes he was. And in most other countries he would be called that. Abortionist smacks of the backstreet, illegal days and is an attempt to devalue his work in my opinion.

Nothing will ever make up for Ross Douthat.

@bellacoker: That is one of the things about media coverage that is truly disturbing to me. He was a doctor dedicated to women’s health whose practice included performing abortions but was not defined by them. And yes, @emilyanne, it does have such below-the-belt connotations that reinforce the anti-choicer’s ammo that he was harmful to society.

Not only was the organized anti-choice movement complicit in the murder of Dr. Tiller; mainstream American media was as well. They better snap the fuck out of it.

I’ve also been hearing news reports that say something like: A majority of young people support restrictions on abortion.

Which makes me want to scream at the tv/computer/radio. 1) Cite your source! and 2) So do I, for example, I think they should be performed by a doctor, and stuff.

The equivocation in the dialogue is overwhelming.

@ Sarah MC: You got that right.
@ bellacoker: It all depends on how you ask the question. I wouldn’t take that too seriously.
