I just want to point out that every single doctor in this country who does abortions at a clinic is a hero. They put up with maniacs every day of their lives, and not just their working lives. In my city, many of the providers are men, and I respect them so much for doing what they do, because they could easily back out and say it’s our problem. One man like these, or like George Tiller or Drs. Kern and Carhart makes up for a lot of male bullshit.

As of last Monday, I am officially trying to conceive. And my last pregnancy was, in addition to being utterly miserable, just dangerous enough that any future pregnancies are high risk.

With my fist successful pregnancy, after two miscarriages and years of trying, I might have been willing to risk my life, although my husband would not have approved of such a decision. But now? Now that I have a two-year-old who worships me and counts on me? I want another kid, but if the pregnancy risked my health in any serious way, I’d choose to abort, no matter how late. Because I love my son and never want to leave him. I guess that makes me a baby hating harlot. Somehow.

Thank you, Dr. Carhart. And especially, thank you Mary Lou Carhart, for being brave enough to send your husband off to risk his life to save the lives of women like me.

@Spark, as a 36-year-old woman who probably wants children, but isn’t ready yet, I am all too aware that by the time I am ready to get pregnant, I will be in a high risk category. I have been thinking about this issue a lot, too, and my thoughts are also dark. As these doctors are murdered and others are scared (rightfully so) to fill their shoes, what will my choices be should I one day find myself in the heartbreaking position of having to consider a late-term abortion? It scares the hell out of me to even write that. It scares the hell out of me what these doctors and clinic workers face every day they go to work. It scares the hell out of me that murder has become an effective way to limit a woman’s right to a legal, medical procedure.

I thought that Dr. Carhart and Dr. Hern were the only doctors performing third-trimester abortions in the US, but this article says there are “fewer than 10.”
This topic has been consuming me, to the extent that I feel like I need to walk away for a while or I’ll never stop crying. I spend a lot of time thinking about starting a family, and my fears have gone totally dark-side. All the stories about the women Dr. Tiller helped are burned into my brain.
No one I know off-line has said WORD ONE about Dr. Tiller, not all my feminist and pro-choice friends, and when I start the conversation: silence.
