And Now a Message About the Secretary of State

Posted by sarah.of.a.lesser.god in Thoughts, Hillary Clinton on Jun 16, 2009, 11:00am | 6 comments

My fellow Harpy SarahMC has already expressed her appreciation of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and given that she has been dubbed an Honorary Harpy, I thought it might be a good time to link to a post on New York Magazine‘s website about some of Clinton’s accomplishments since being sworn in. The article points out just how much Secretary Clinton’s fortunes have changed in the past year; last June, her Presidential campaign was on its last legs, and now she is one of the most important members (if not the most important member) of President Obama’s cabinet. Her accomplishments during her short tenure have ranged from extending benefits to the same-sex partners of Foreign Service officers to simply presenting foreign policy observations that constitute “a sane, sober alternative to the crazies running the GOP.”

Her approval rating is now at 70%, and there appears to be very little distance, let alone disagreement, between Clinton and Obama. Remember all those rumors about how she would bring discord to the administration? Yeah, that totally is not the case: “If Clinton minds toiling in Obama’s shadow, or representing her former rival as America’s best face to the world, she hasn’t shown it.” Wow, it’s almost like people were expecting a brilliant, powerful woman to be a humorless bitch! Imagine that!

The one thing we always knew about HRC is that she is incredibly intelligent and works like a demon. Even her enemies don’t dispute that. She’s the consummate professional and Obama knew that whatever might have happened during the campaign, she could be counted on to shine in whatever role he could get her to take. And she has.

HRC always amaze me. He has and is a big inspiration for me (I study poli sci because of her!). If I am half the woman she is, I’ll be fine. :) I remember when her presidential campaign was over, and republican politics were saying that her political career was over… it feels like she just started.

Hillary Clinton is the type of woman we desperately need in the public spotlight–gracious, intelligent, professional, clear-headed, and ambitious. She exudes this quiet confidence in herself and her abilities without denegrating anyone, and never appologizes for being herself or having those ambitions. I can only hope that she can in a small way counteract the messages that the young women and girls are getting from our society and media.

@BeckySharper @vertigo29 @Miss Pinot: She is terrific. And yes, she is a great role model for all women. I had the privilege of meeting her and she was unfailingly nice and NORMAL and so approachable. She seems so happy and comfortable as SoS, and she’s doing a great job from my point of view.

Although I’m not a huge fan of Hillary Clinton the politician (I differ greatly on a number of issues from her), I like her more and more as the SoC every time I read about her.

*SoS. IDK what abbreviations I’m using, y’all.
