Jenny was the original Zooey, had to be said.

While I agree with you pragmatically, your argument has a fundamental flaw-you're directly stating that an individual shouldn't pursue the romance they desire. It is natural to be attracted to that which does not threaten (i.e., provides comfort), and these individuals are pursuing the square whole for their square peg. Let them.

Choose your own adventure.

I imagine its a year and a half to late... but I'd like to try and defend the poor fans of hers like myself... as we seem not to have any representation here.
I dont know about your particular guy, but for me I find the spontanious charactor she plays (I havent seen a movie where she played a non-spontanious charactor ;) ) adorable moreso then the emotionally unstable aspect. Also all of them are endearing in their awkwardness and most of the time fearlessness, and for me in life I kinda prefer a girl that isn't trying to be prefect, but rather is happy just being. On another note, any girl I've ever spent a decent amount of time with professes to enjoy thrill and spontaneity, but when it really comes down to it they dont like surprises and change just like everyone else. So what wrong with our fantasies of a girl that actually wants to do things ;). Plus the first movie I saw her in she sang... nothing makes a girl/women more beautiful then sharing her voice...
PS I had to look up Manic Pixie Dream Girl on wikipedia, and I imagine I'm fond of the entire archeotype... though I could do without the manic if it still had the implusiveness.
Loves to all you ladies.

This was a great read. I generally like Zooey, though with some reservations, but I agree with a lot of what you wrote. It's the pedestal people put Zooey and other 'it' girls on that is worrying. It's the certainty they MUST be perfect. The number of comments I see online saying 'marry me Zooey!' or 'she's my perfect woman!' or even, from girls 'I wish I had a friend like her!' are astounding!

By the way, if you haven't seen 500 Days of Summer yet, I wouldn't write it off. I actually like it because it is a study in exactly what you've written about - a guy thinking a girl is The One because she ticks all his indie dream girl boxes. But he really doesn't know her at all. It pulls apart the concept of MPDG in an interesting way (though she's not strictly an MPDG).

BUT the men that you wrote about in the letter above were also at the concert and were SOO ANNOYING between every song trying to yell out comments to flirt with her...as if they stand a chance...She did a good job at dealing with their annoyances though!

One guy actually yelled out "Zooey is my father" (just for the shock factor in order to get her attention of course) she literally stopped what she was doing and walked over to her mike and was like "WHAT?" it was quite funny.

Well it may be true that in some movies (mostly blockbusters) she is type casted if you are a true fan of hers you have seen more than those said blockbusters.

Winter Passing as was stated before she plays a dark, angry, sex and drug addicted, self-pain inflicting, kitten killer.

Also in Manic she plays a timid scared sad girl that is a victim of rape and is in a inpatient psych ward. She barely looks like they even put makeup on her. Her hair is short and messy. Yea NOT typical Zooey but great movie.

PS. I just saw her in concert last night. I was less than 6 feet away from her and let me tell you (and I am a girl) she is BEAUTIFUL in person. Sweet funny and her voice sounds GREAT live!

I don't blame guys for liking her...If I was a lesbian I'd be all over that too haha...

I quite like this post that being said, I love Zooey Deschanel, and for the most part I love her for the reasons explained in this post, I like the fact that she is nonthreatening and has this idealized indie hipster vibe about her, but that doesn't negate the fact that I love Zooey Deschanel in the same way I love Audrey Hepburn (though she's a fair bit up the scale).

Now this may just be me, but I fail to see where you have allowed reality to enter into your words, Zoeey Deschanel is an actress and as such plays characters shown only in a way that the producers and directors of the films she is in want. what we the adoring fanboys see is what we dream for, and personally I am not so far removed from real life that i can't separate what I see for two hours on a screen, what I wish for in my head and what exists in reality. There is a reason dreams never come true, because we fanboys all know that if we were to date any of Zooey Deschanel's characters they'd be empty and our relationship would probably not even last the duration of the film. Zooey Deschanel is a wonderful actress, although suited only to a narrow character type, but I live my life off the silver screen, let's not forget that a fantasy is just that, fantasy.
