Friday Fun Thread: Labor Day Plans

Posted by PhDork in Friday Fun Thread, Thoughts on Sep 4, 2009, 12:00pm | 21 comments

This is totally U.S.-centric, but since I’m stuck in the city (and in the U.S.) for the “last weekend of summer,” I’m fantasizing about Labor Day getaways.

When I can, I go back to the midwest to spend the weekend among as many as 200 relatives at our annual family reunion.  We swim in the lake, eat potluck (catfish and squirrel for those who want it!) for days, dandle new babies and look at old photos, but the schedule doesn’t allow it this year.  Boo-hoo.

Instead, I’m working on lectures and trying to get some writing time in.  Maybe we’ll get brunch somewhere.  woo.  hoo.

So, Calgon, take me away with your awesome holiday plans.  What are you doing for Labor Day?  And for our beloved non-US readers, what do you like to do over a long weekend?

Posting, I suspect, will be light until we all return on Tuesday.  Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Atlantic City on Sunday to have fun with the kids and to see Dane Cook. That’s pretty much it.

I’m dogsitting for my dogs (who live with mother.of.a.lesser.god, unfortunately), Reggie Jackson (a.k.a. Jack), Laurence Olivier (a.k.a. Ollie), and Lola. I’m also reading “Beowulf” and two Dickens books, because a new semester started last week. Plus I’ll be listening to/watching all the Yankee games, but I do that anyway.

    Noooooo not Dane Cook, Newt!

My friend is visiting from Seattle. I’m pumped.

I’m in Pilgrim Soul’s homeland, enjoying the dark rainy woods and craggy, rocky beaches of Vancouver Island with my family–it’s MamaSharper’s birthday and she has a favorite resort here.

I’ve made it through two books–Tea Time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith and South of Broad by Pat Conroy–and have just started the new Steig Larsson book, but my e-reader is low on battery power, so I have to go into town to find a bookstore or I’ll be stuck without reading material, which is a fate almost worse than death.

My oldest friend will be in town (she’s in Alabama doing a residency program)so we’re gonna hang out. But also, yay! College football official kickoff weekend!!! Sorry, SOALG, you can keep your boring old baseball. ;-)

Going to see a friend’s band play at the grand opening weekend for a new bar/club place, hitting a big sale at my local knitting store, enjoying the second to last weekend of my 20s and generally avoiding traffic caused by the return of college football (living in an SEC college town really stinks when you aren’t into the games). Oh! And booze. Always booze.

I’m settling in for a big weekend of no plans. Dog, husband…oh, and maybe deliver a baby. That would be lovely. :-)

I’m going to see Daniel Quinn speak tomorrow morning and then hanging out and doing all of the schoolwork I should have done this week. If there is a big rain, I have secured a secret location for setting of a metric shit-ton of fireworks.

Labor Day related: We are doing the first ever inventory of the library here, and have discovered that someone has absconded with ALL of our Mother Jones books. Every one, like 10 of them. Someone has a sweet Labor-lovin’ library…

Congrats TVille! I didn’t realize you were expecting. Come oooooon baby!

And that Becky is why ereaders will never trump books, never, never, never. Sorry I refuse to bow to this technology, refuse.

Er right back on track, hmm I shall spend this labour day weekend as I have spent the last three weeks, feeding a greedy baby while reading novels (currently Philippa Gregory’s historical fiction, I must admit with a tinge of guilt) while my husband thinks up new and exciting ways to keep a toddler entertained. At some point a film may be watched and decent food eaten. That’s the extent of my excitement these days….

Parents are coming into town tomorrow, Dad sister friend and myself are running in a 9-11 5k benefit race in Arlington tomorrow night. Nothing else planned yet, although knowing my family I am sure there will be lots of eating involved.

TVille, best of luck! Keep us posted!

And bluebears, you take that back! Baseball is scintillating, titillating, and, uh, masturbating? Ran out of rhymes there.

Oh, and I forgot: I’ll be having dinner with my grandparents! My grandma is 84, so I treasure my time with her. She’s awesome.

    So: family, friends, food. Awesome.
rodriguez, plz to send dark rum with ginger beer.
TVille, best to you and your growing fam. “Labor Day” might have a whole new meaning for you.

@TVille: I’ll be thinking of you! Breathe, girl, breathe!

No special plans here except a lunch tomorrow with a friend of our son’s, B, who needs counseling and an ear. Her mother consistently rejects all of her attempts to start a conversation about B’s bisexuality, and B is terribly hurt and at her wit’s end about what to do. Making it trickier for us is that B and her mother are African-American and we’re white. So there are nuances we won’t understand. Wish us luck and send advice if you have any!

Oh, and take a minute to call or email the White House! Let’s make sure he hears from the non-crazies too! 202-456-1111 or http://www.whitehouse.gov/CONTACT/

so this weekend isn’t the Labour Day long weekend in Australia… ours is in October… and then there’s the other long weekends…

On long weekends some of the things I enjoy doing are, gathering up a group of friends with the significant other and: camping somewhere on the Central Coast near the Lakes, visiting the Nation’s Capital at this great BnB that is really relaxing to hang out in, staying at home and doing the watching of entire seasons of shows I like..

Thanks ya’ll! I was hoping the full moon last night might have been just the boost the babe needed…sadly, full moon: FAIL.

At least the weather is lovely.
