Your last sentence sums it up for me.

I grew up with divorced, non-remarried parents, so I took it for granted for the longest time that both men and women can work and support themselves (and that I would), and was shocked to find that not everyone sees that.

One of the things that upsets me most nowadays is when my mom starts wondering if she should have just married a rich dude like her sisters. After all she's achieved (and she ain't doing badly at all), it's the ultimate head/desk, with a bit of extra sadness on top.

The premium is the same, but the relationship is different. They're dancing around saying that. Two adults who live together and share work and expenses can cut their costs and their workload-it was always true and will always be true.

Major newsweeklies aren't know for their cutting-edge journalism. It's more like they're bringing new-ish theories to the masses, somewhat late and dumbed-down for general consumption. So in that sense they're like canaries in the coal mine. If Newsweek and Time are talking about a theory or trend, it must have been out there for a while. Looked at this way, the article simply confirms the trend that lots of people are choosing not to get married or to set up non-traditional households. Red-state America may need to see that in print to accept it.
