I don’t know. When my cousin was accused of a crime, his sister came to me asking for his support. I told her I couldn’t just support him out of blind loyalty and I needed to hear the all facts. Good thing, too, because he was guilty. I don’t understand how someone could just support someone accused of such a thing just because they are good friends. You support friends thru a lot of things, but crimes…? Heck no. Don’t make me an accessory after the fact.

Right on, Caitlin!

I’ll bet a number of signers don’t know, or care to know, the facts of his crimes. It’s easy to get your back up when faceless authority figures are “persecuting” one of your own. It’s a lot harder to wrestle with the reality of rapists and rape culture, especially within your special snowflake community of enlightened artists.

Good for Emma if she’s reconsidering, but she should have never signed it to begin with.

@mischiefmanager: Exactly. Most of these people signed this petition because they don’t want their friend (and in Hollywood friend means someone I met twice and was reallllly cool) to go to jail, or for different egotistical reasons.
I can be compassionate about the pain a person has experienced in life and still want justice served. The fact that Emma signed it in the first place is the problem. I don’t care if she was pressured into it, or if she didn’t know the facts of the case before signing it, she does know that he committed a crime and she does/did want him to get off scott free.
Any cool points Emma had from me are gone, although she is still better off in my book than Natalie Portman who has – cool points.

I really love her and respect her so much. I was glad to hear why she decided to sign (I was shocked when I heard of all the actors signing that petition. Come on!), but I’m more glad to hear she’s changed her mind.

The whole line about how he should get away with this because of how terrible his life has been is beyond outrageous. How come it never works for black guys from bad neighborhoods who grow up seeing people they love shot in front of them?

Please please let her follow through! I really loved this last part of what she said: “Know that I will remove my name because of you, and all of the good work that you have been doing. I have read your petition. I have heard you. And I will listen.” We can make a difference. We need to keep fighting for what we believe in. It gives me hope on an otherwise very sad and disheartening day.

Much respect to Caitlin for being both confrontational and persuasive, and to Emma for being honest about her motives and hearing Caitlin out.
