We’re all up to our eyeballs in various meat-space commitments, so please forgive our recent absence. In the meantime, a fisk-able link and a pithy quote…
There have been several occasions over the last few day where a quote from scholar Peggy Phelan has floated to the front of my mind, and at least once to my lips. Reading this article makes me want to scream it from the rooftops. I am not allowed access to my own rooftop, but I do have a blog.
If representational visibility equals power, then almost-naked young white women should be running Western culture.

“How many of those self-important, so-called ‘feminists’ have been on the set when a celebrity shot a Playboy spread? There you go.”
Indeed! Thank you for that cogent argument in support of your position Joanna Krupa.
Love it.
And if she’s right it would prove the much-cited-by-douchebags Joe Francis principle: Flashing your tits DOES equal empowerment!
This is Facebook status-worthy. It is now mine.
@vegkitty: I was JUST thinking the same thing!
Sure, taking your clothes off for men is empowering, if you’re as dumb as a paintbrush. Somehow, I never saw it working out for me all that well.
So let’s see, in the studio you’re product and in the magazine buyer’s hands, you’re, uh, a means to an end.
Very empowering. Thanks, Ms Krupa.
Hey! We talked about that quote (the Peggy Phelan one) in my History of Design class just a couple of weeks ago!
That’s what I love about my prof for that class – he encourages us to think about things in feminist terms. Especially in classes like the ones he teaches – design theory – we tackle a lot of advertising, and it makes me soooooo happy that he is so aware of the implications of the use of women in advertising

Yeah, because posing for Playboy has totally resulted in equal pay for equal work (well, if your work consists of getting naked for dudes), proportionate political representation, access to abortion, effective domestic violence laws, and increased rape convictions. Thanks, Joanna- I’m going to go charge lunch to the credit card in my name and then head to the house that I own, which would not have been possible without trailblazing women such as yourself taking off your clothes. Please, tell Alice Paul, Gloria Steinem, and bell hooks how they, too, can contribute to the movement to improve women’s lives.
