Given that today’s weather here in New York City is gray and nasty, I have the urge to curl up with my comfort blanket (named Gandalf for the wizard in Lord of the Rings, of course) and a cup of cocoa and watch a movie. Not just any movie, but a movie that I know like the back of my hand, one that always allows me to forget everything else and just enjoy myself for a few hours. It’s also a movie that, well, part of me is ashamed for loving as much as I do. I’m referring to Titanic, my ultimate guilty pleasure. Okay, so the love story is completely improbable, and sometimes sap actually oozes from my DVD player when I watch it. It contains the music of Celine Dion, for God’s sake. And every time I watch it, it begs the inevitable question, “whatever happened to Billy Zane?” But I still love it.
Guilty pleasures are those things that you absolutely love, even though you know they’re a bit silly or corny or idiotic. Sometimes you don’t even want to admit to loving them, because you can hear other people snickering. Screw ‘em. Is Titanic eye-roll inducing in parts? Yeah. But that’s part of the beauty of it. I’ll never stop loving it. I’ll never let go! Ahem. Sorry, I had to.
So, share your guilty pleasures with us! Is it a movie? A TV show? A song? A book? Because what’s life without guilty pleasures, be it a three-hour one like Titanic or a three-minute one like the awesomely goofy karaoke version of “Beyond the Sea” in A Life Less Ordinary? Sometimes you just have to forget everything else and indulge your love for the cornier things in life.

This goddamn Lady Gaga Bad Romance video. I CAN’T STOP WATCHING IT!!!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one with the inexplicable Rock of Love and Real Housewives habit. I don’t understand why I can’t look away.
My guilty pleasures are anything Queen and especially Freddie Mercury. Legos just came out with a new Rock Band game that Lego-ized the band, and I’m hoping they’ll make a Freddie Lego set to go with it. I want the toy to play with!
PhDork: go to gigapedia.com ; sign up (you need a gmail account, but you can create one just for the purpose; email me if you want to use mine to try it), then search — be sure to use the “gigapedia” search rather than the “google” search. The actual files are in the “links” tab rather than the “comments” tab.
They have ~330k books right now, mostly from academic presses. Their coverage in the areas I care about is pretty solid, but YMMV.
Ok i’m late to this thread but I will hold my hand up to the following:
1. like bluebears I can not quit McDonalds, I loved being pregnant because occasionally I used it to justify my quaterpounder with cheese desires.
2. I’ll see all your trashy novel tastes and raise you by ten. By day I might read JM Coetzee, William Trevor and AS Byatt to name three recent ones but by night I read Jackie Collins, Jilly Cooper and all manner of trash. Not chick lit, which I am not a fan of, but all out bonkbusters, Shirley Conran, Judith Krantz, June Flaum Singer…. if it was trash in the 80s then I own and reread it. Frequently.
3. I bow to no one for my love of Gossip Girl, actually I don’t even feel that guilty about that one…
emilyanne, I echo your unashamed love of Gossip Girl. Particularly the episodes where S and B act all spatting-couple-y.
HistoricUpstart, I have had that song stuck in my head for about three days straight. I’m hoping that watching the video over and over will help clear it out of my system, but no luck so far!
