I remember reading once that Marion Zimmer Bradley was able to succeed in part because her name was spelled the “male” way. And it came as a shock to my mother when I pointed out that Andre Norton was also a woman. Mom had been reading Norton before I was born, and I had to show her a dust jacket photo to prove it!

I read a blog, which I can’t find now, about a guy with a strange first name whose autobiographical work was rejected because the reviewer assumed he was female. He was given notes about how he isn’t able to write convincing male characters. Which is to say, sadly not much has changed.
