Make Coakley #18!

Posted by PhDork in Harpy Shout-out, Activism, Politics on Dec 9, 2009, 1:00pm | 14 comments

Have we any Massachusetts residents* among our readers?  If so, may I urge you to donate to–or at least vote for–Martha Coakley, currently your Attorney General, to take over the late lamented Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat?

Yesterday, Coakley handily won the Democratic primary, and is now looking toward the general election on January 19th, where she’ll take on state senator Scott Brown.  (If you’re not registered to vote, stop reading right now and get on that!)

Coakley would be the first female senator from MA, and the eighteenth in the Senate right now.  Her positions on reproductive rights, healthcare reform, DOMA, DADT, victims’ advocacy, and a zillion other things you can read about at her website, are laudable, and befitting a progressive from a state that has already recognized same-sex marriage and vastly expanded health care coverage back in 2006.

Granted, I’m a New Yorker, so I can’t speak directly to her years of service–citizens of the commonwealth, please weigh in–but the presence of another smart, dedicated female ally in the Senate can’t be anything but good.

*What’s the word for that?  “Massachusans”?  “Massachusettians”?

What’s the word for that? Well, as a Yankees fan I tend to call them Mass-holes. ;)

I’m with soalg. I lived in Boston for a few years and I’m going say Massholes for sure! Meant with the utmost affection.

While I was there I worked at a non-profit legal firm advocating for people with disabilities. Martha Coakley was pretty bomb for our legal area as AG. She will be a tremendous senator.

Us Massachusetts-native Red Sox fans are on occasion known to call ourselves “Massholes” too.
According to Wikipedia (and, apparently to state law! who knew?) we’re supposed to be called “Bay Staters.”

As a Yankees fan and a former Boston resident, Massholes is correct. For any number of reasons (you damn crazy drivers!) :)

I’m in VA now but will spreading the word to the many people I love who still live in MA.

Massholes is indeed the preferred term. It is worn with deepfelt pride.

Yep, massholes is the correct name. As a Yankees fan living in MA now…it fits!

We are Massholes whether we like it or not. But some of us are sports-hating socialists who are afraid of most of our fellow drivers.

Anyway, I am definitely voting for Martha Coakley! I love her. Capuano was a strong contender in the primary, but she has more experience and a stronger voice. I hope she wins.

I also have to say I love that picture of her. She looks like a woman who knows how to take care of business.

I voted for her yesterday!! Very happy that she won with 47% of the votes.

Really excited that she won, and despite what some were saying, I don’t think it was solely because of her gender… But if it was, good for those who recognized that we need more women in positions of power.

I’ve been volunteering on her campaign, and besides feeling like I accomplished something, I’ve been able to meet some of the most amazing tough old broads who support her!

It’s Massholes…we even call ourselves that.

What’s with all the Yankee fans on this blog? pah!

I’m a Mass resident currently living in exile for a year (Rhode Island) and very pleased she won the primary.

And I agree, soalg, that is a might fine picture.

@rainy_day my first contact with “massholes” was growing up living in Southern NH; people with mass plates were the worst drivers ever, and flocked northward on weekends to locust on our lack of sales tax.
