Ah ha I like IBTC. If only because some of my friends in college (all gaybos) announced that they were an Itty Bitty Titty Committee, although that was years before the movie came out. I was their number one fan.

It’s like candy fairy tales, but entirely inoffensive from a feminist POV. All those silly mindless movies that everyone loves on TNT? Can’t watch them. If I have to pretend that Lloyd Dobbler is actually romantic in order to enjoy a movie, it just isn’t enjoyable. But this is so fun, and it also made me want to start culture jamming all over the place.

Also, how awesome is it that one of the characters was named Shulamith? And I frequently quote the movie, actually: “Forget gay marriage! Forget straight marriage! I saw we abolish all marriage!”

The end is so silly. I don’t mean to say that it’s dumb–it isn’t. It’s just kind of fairy-tale-esque and obviously fantasy. Which is really nice.

@PS: yeah we kept feeling like the movie was building towards something more…profound? Or something? I mean I appreciated all the talk about men turning young girls into sex objects etc…I just thought there was maybe too much going on that was left unsaid (the whole serial killer subplot?)

I really like Ellen Page though, she’s awesome.

Oh, HO! I love IBTC! I love the implausibility – not the least because plausibility usually means depressing as hell. That’s my go-to movie for sad, rainy days. Maybe I will go home and watch it tonight, actually. It’s been a while.

I would consider Disfigured, though my tolerance for anything even faintly pro-anorexia is pretty low.

Haha, SOALG and I watched IBTC together once, and thought it was strange. I can’t remember too much about it.

“Womyn” doesn’t bother me unless it’s being used as a slur or a marketing trick, and I suspect the above is the latter.

I had forgotten Daniela Sea was in IBTC. Personally, I think the L Word did a far better job of this sort of thing, although it was aimed at an older audience.

bluebears, I’ve seen Hard Candy and I found it a little My First Movie with all the “arty” shots and attempts at edginess. Of course, I’d watch Patrick Wilson and Ellen Page pick their noses for two hours.

A “womyn”? Are we still doing that?

I was once invited to join a feminist activist group of some sort (I don’t remember what). At their first meeting they had a very, VERY long argument about how to spell “woman” in the name of the group. I never went back.

But good for Netflix for distributing these films.

IBTC sounds interesting. I do have Netflix so maybe I think I’ll add that to our list.

Not to change the subject but has anyone seen Hard Candy with Ellen Page? Teenage girl gets graphic revenge on a suspected pedophile. BF and I watched it on demand the weekend after Thanksgiving and I had…mixed feelings to say the least. I’d be interested to hear other peoples take on it.
