Friday Fun Thread: Go-To Web Happies!

Posted by PhDork in Friday Fun Thread, Larfs on Feb 5, 2010, 10:00am | 38 comments

Just say no to drugs, kids.

One of the many wonderful things about the web, and especially sites like YouTube, is that you can find yourself a little pick-me-up with a few clicks of the mouse.

Since I first saw the Hamster Dance (warning for loud annoying music), back in 1999, I’ve frequently enjoyed these 2-minute mood-lifters, and this time of year, when I doubt I will ever see the sun again, I appreciate them even more.

We started our Facebook page this week, and seeing so many of you join us over there is a great variation on a web-happy, but what prompted this FFT is a video one of our readers, Erin, posted to our page there, and which deserves to be seen.  (Thanks, Erin!)

It’s next to impossible to choose a favorite (for me, anyway):  I love to watch Maru, anything with Cookie Monster, and I still giggle at the poor kid all doped up after a dental appointment, but this one, which I am shamelessly ripping off from Twisty, will be in heavy rotation for the time being.

When you’re feeling blah, or just in need of a break, what’s your current favorite?

(Please just post links; and if it doesn’t show up right away, hang in there, some links may result in your post needing moderator approval, and we’ll get to them ASAP.)

I don’t even like pugs that much (I mean, they’re cute and all, I’m just a cat person) but this video never fails to provide a much needed Moment of Zen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uuqXXT7VYo

Genius idea! PhD you are on a streak. Now this page will be a catalog of web happies. It’s a cliche but I love the censored count.

Dang, Ph.Dork, can you get your butt cheeks to move separately that way?

Keyboard cat, in his various appearances, always reduces me to helpless giggles.

I have the feeling my work day is about to become significantly less productive.

Oh my lord, rodriguez, I laughed until I cried. Get down wit’cho nasty self, Count!

I have to admit I resort to the webcomics in high blood pressure moments. The standards:

I loved the clip of the guy who taught himself the Single Ladies dance and did it side by side with the Beyonce video. Though it seems to have been removed from YouTube.

My favorite YouTube pick-me-up is “Kittens, Inspired by Kittens.” Cute little girl narrating a book about kittens! (Warning: You may find yourself, after a few glasses of wine, yelling “We are wine bottles!” and giggling like crazy.)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtX8nswnUKU

I’m also a firm proponent of typing “puppies” into a YouTube search at least once a week. Nothing makes me happier than knowing there are thousands of cute puppy videos out there.

The Armstrong and Miller clip of a Victorian Gentleman singing the Electric Six song Gay Bar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2kD1YUtA5o

Makes me shriek like a loon every damn time.

    Or this: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/076041c13b/the-ballad-of-g-i-joe

The Ballad of GI Joe. I would KILL to see this movie as opposed to what they actually produced.

These are two great ones for parents:

    This one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8SLTvA39xI

It’s sheer WTF-ness brings delight to my heart.

Also: videos of baby animals of every species. This video isn’t the best quality, but I like to pretend I’m that person, and there’s a baby platypus toodling around my ankles.

    AAAAAHHH Odonata! AMINALS!

How could I forgot to mention a sloth video? My blood pressure instantly goes down. My dream is to scrape together enough dough to go down to the sanctuary in Costa Rica and spend a month helping the sloths.

  15. Odonata says:
    February 5, 2010 at 1:55 pm

PhDork: YES! That is a beautiful, beautiful vacation pan, and very doable. I hope you can make it happen!

I learned recently that sloths defecate and urinate approximately once a week, and they schedule it so they make the long trek to the forest floor so they can properly bury their droppings. Fascinating! Also I like how their little faces are smiling all the time. Anthropomorphizing: I am guilty of it.

Off topic, But what of those of us who will never ever ever join facebook, will we cast adrift from the fun? Left alone and bereft of harpies because we loathe social networking sites and don’t want our old school friends, casual acquaintances or former coworkers to track us down and then spend their time irritating us? Who will speak for those of us who just well don’t really ever feel that social? (I am not entirely serious about this)

  19. BeckySharper says:
    February 5, 2010 at 2:25 pm

@emilyanne: One could theoretically join a social networking site using a pseudonym, thus preventing irritating people from finding one, and being visible only to people one chooses.

  20. bellacoker says:
    February 5, 2010 at 2:51 pm

This is off-topic but I had a dream last night that I went to a bar in Mexico to see a lady, and when she had finished singing, I went up to say, “Hi.” We didn’t know each other, but she walked up and was like, “You’re on harpyness!” And then we drove around looking for a cup of coffee. It was very pleasant.

So, thank you all for permeating my dreams.

  21. Ms. M says:
    February 5, 2010 at 4:00 pm

I echo emilyanne…I loathe social networking sites, and frankly am going to miss all the fun. I just don’t have TIME to add yet another form of communication to my roster. Sigh. Have fun over there Harpies!

For instant high blood pressure relief I turn to this amazing video of the Kuroshio Sea set to beautiful music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7deClndzQw

I have to second George Washington as well as other Neely stuff like the Professor Brothers. I’ve seen them a million times and I always laugh my ass off. Also the Censored Count.

Leeroy Jenkins even though everyone who plays WoW and most people who don’t have seen it.

    Owls

    Gay Bar

    Charlie the Unicorn

I second that, Odonata. No favorites come to mind but I like videos from CuteOverload and Zooborns and anywhere else that celebrates animals!

Don’t fret Emilyanne & Ms. M; we keep most of the fun over here.

OK, I’ll play! I have recently become unwholesomely obsessed with this song:

    http://www.last.fm/music/Jonathan+Coulton/_/Baby+Got+Back

It’s a few years old now, so you may have already seen it.

It’s the ONLY song I can dance to! What does this mean?!?

Oh I wish I remember the link but it was a video about a little boy telling his mom he loves her but he doesn’t like her all the time. The matter of fact way he let’s her know this isn’t malicious, it’s honest and you can tell even she had trouble not laughing.

The other was a video of a dog when his owner comes home from a deployment. This dog is so obviously beside itself with joy. I really challenge people who say animals have no souls to watch it and then tell me that.

I think my fave picker-upper is the Jill & Kevin wedding entrance. I would take that video to Massachusetts and marry it if it would have me. I know everyone’s seen it, but just in case you’d like to rewatch:
