You Want To Go To There

Posted by PhDork in Harpy Shout-out, Fun Stuff, Ladybits, Larfs on Feb 19, 2010, 1:30pm | 11 comments

Mom, can I ask you a question?

And so do I.

I just got an email from the Dude with that subject line, about an event next Monday that is full of awesome.  If you’re in the NYC metro area, heads up!

1.  It’s taking place at the Bookstore/Cafe of  Housing Works, which is a great charity that focuses on helping the homeless and those suffering with HIV/AIDS, and is a great place to while away an afternoon.

2.  It’s called “That Not So Fresh Feeling:  Marketing Embarrassing Products to Women.”  Who doesn’t love dragging things that are supposed to be shameful and icky out into the light, where we can see they are really neither icky or shameful, and have a good laugh into the bargain?

And oh, there shall be laughs:

3.  It features the author of the new cultural history of menstruation called Flow, Susan Kim, Hanna Rosin, co-editor of Slate’s lady-blog DoubleX, and Harpy favorite Sarah Haskins, whose Target: Women series (RIP) is some of the best feminist culture-jamming out there.

4.  It’s FREE, bitches!  (Although it would be very cool to make a donation to HW.)

You can get all the deets (not that there are many more) here.  Who’s in?

Well, Haskins doing T:W is–she’s now working a screenplay and some other projects. No word what is actually happening to the series. But thank maude for YouTube, right?

CRAP! I can’t make it–I’m working my shift at the crunchy neighborhood food Co-op that night (how painfully stereotypically liberal is that?). Please, y’all, go! I want to hear all about it!

Have fun those Harpies that can go. I wish I could go as well – however those oceans are wide and deep, and I have an essay to finish by Thursday.

On something similar that the Harpy community may like, the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney (Australia) has a whole archive dedicated to menstruation and those “feminine” products, have a look here: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/rags/
however it may not be as full as laffs as the one on Monday.

Ugh, of course it’s the one week I’m actually OUT of NYC. I want details and photographic evidence!

    …I didn’t just squeal like a teen fan-girl, I swear.

And, yes, I plan on being there. I just started working about a mile from there, so I don’t even have a long commute from the Jerz!

I wish I lived there so I could go.

I have been asked by like 10 separate people from different areas of my life if I’m going to this. (I am.) I suspect it will be PACKED.
