I may have mentioned before that I volunteer with an animal rescue group in the area. Right now I am fostering a little beagle lady named Miley, and I thought I’d do some advertising for her on Harpyness.
This is her. She’s probably eight to ten years old but you can never be sure. She is a bit timid but super sweet and gentle. Now that I’ve had her a few days she gets really excited when I come home from work or even come out of the bathroom. As you can see, she is skin and bones so I’m trying to fatten her up. She is house-trained and doesn’t make a peep (except for some snoring). She is happy to relax in a comfy spot around the house but she is always eager to trot around outside. She is very good on a leash and enjoys the dog park.
She gets along well with my dog and is fine around kids (though any home that adopts her should probably not have very small children). We live in the DC area, of course. If you or anyone you know would be interested in meeting her, please let me know! I want to find a safe and loving home for her to live out her golden years. The adoption fee is $200.
Thank you!

SarahMC, what a beautiful beagle! Animal fostering is such a wonderful thing to do. Kudos to you! When we finally get settled in our new place in a few months, I hope to do the same.
In the meantime, I will forward this to my DC area friends who might be interested in this gorgeous girl.
She’s so cute! I’m in NYS, do not have the room (or $) for another dog and my toy poodle doesn’t play well with others (our fault – she’s spoiled and thinks she is a child). But, Miley just sounds like such a good dog. Poor baby. I just don’t understand people who neglect and abuse animals. Thank you for volunteering your home, heart, time and love for these little guys. I hope you find her a good home!
Aw, my BF and I love beagles so much!! Sadly, my BF is also exceptionally allergic to pups. I hope Miley finds a lovely permanent home soon!
Oh, what a sweetie! It always breaks my heart a little when I see pets who need homes and I can’t help. (Which means my heart gets broken every time I go to get more cat and/or bunny food, because my pet store has an adoption center.) But I will share this with my Twitter friends–I hope Miley finds a wonderful home!
You’re killing me, smalls. You know I’m looking for a chill, older dog that is small enough to live in a large apartment without it feeling like animal abuse. Can’t you bring her to NY? I’ll pay your zipcar rental! You can crash on my couch for the weekend!
I’m not a dog person at all, but that one is so cute, she’s making me re-evaluate!
Oh, she looks like such a sweet girl. If I wasn’t so broke, I would be all over her. Sadly, I am barely keeping my current beagle in kibble and dogwalkers as it is.
Damn it, and here I am over 2,000 miles away. She looks so sweet, and the Boy loves beagles. He grew up with them.
I hope you find her a good home!!!
If I lived in your area and didn’t already live in a tiny house with one dude and 3 cats I would TOTALLY be interested. Seriously someone from DC, adopt her!
Awww, I hope you are able to find her a forever home!
By the way, how did you get involved in fostering? I would love to do something like that once my own rescue dog is a bit more settled in.
yvanehtnioj, you are welcome to come meet her! Although I am sure there are lots of senior pups waiting for you in your area.
Elizabeth, once I got settled into a home that allowed pets I decided to give fostering a try. Since my family has always had beagles I went to a beagle rescue in Maryland and took Hoagie home to foster. I became a “failed foster” by adopting him a week later. I still wanted to be involved in rescuing somehow so I volunteer at adoption events (handling available dogs and talking to people about them) and fostered two dogs last year. And now I have Miley. I just can’t say no to sad hound faces.
In most cases you fill out a foster application with the rescue and they will set you up with a dog that fits your lifestyle. You basically just provide a nice home for them and the rescue will compensate you for food and medicine and vet visits (if needed). I don’t ask for compensation for food or treats or anything; I consider it a donation. Then you take the dog to adoption events when you can. If you can’t make it to events, the rescue has volunteer handlers that will bring the dog. Rescues that have cats and kittens need fosters for them too.
Rescues ALWAYS need foster homes for their animals.
SarahMC, thanks for the reply! I just checked my local shelter’s website and it looks like they are in desperate need of fosters for cats right now. I think you have inspired me. Maybe my cat will be meeting a new friend.
Oh Elizabeth; that would be great! Let me know how things go. You are always welcome to email me too.
