Elizabeth, once I got settled into a home that allowed pets I decided to give fostering a try. Since my family has always had beagles I went to a beagle rescue in Maryland and took Hoagie home to foster. I became a “failed foster” by adopting him a week later. I still wanted to be involved in rescuing somehow so I volunteer at adoption events (handling available dogs and talking to people about them) and fostered two dogs last year. And now I have Miley. I just can’t say no to sad hound faces.

In most cases you fill out a foster application with the rescue and they will set you up with a dog that fits your lifestyle. You basically just provide a nice home for them and the rescue will compensate you for food and medicine and vet visits (if needed). I don’t ask for compensation for food or treats or anything; I consider it a donation. Then you take the dog to adoption events when you can. If you can’t make it to events, the rescue has volunteer handlers that will bring the dog. Rescues that have cats and kittens need fosters for them too.

Rescues ALWAYS need foster homes for their animals.

By the way, how did you get involved in fostering? I would love to do something like that once my own rescue dog is a bit more settled in.
