Friday Linkaround: No, Really, I’m Gonna Do This For Real This Time Version

Posted by Pilgrim Soul in Linkaround on Mar 26, 2010, 1:16pm | 8 comments

I have oft-promised the other Harpies to do a linkaround on Fridays for good and interesting progressive work on the internet, and just as often, except I think perhaps twice, I have failed to do so.  The excuse used to be work, but since I am not really working at the moment in any way, I no longer have that, so.   Let today be the successful inauguration of a tradition!

You are also welcome to drop links to your own blogs in the comments.  We’d love to see what our readers are writing and thinking about.

The linkaround is meant to introduce our readers to other spaces and perspectives, and I do ask that if you choose to read these blogs as a visitor from here, try to be good blog-guests and allow these ideas room to breathe even if you aren’t convinced on first impression.  Let’s all keep in mind (and this means me too) that there is just as much value in listening as there is in talking.  You can also talk about the links here, of course, but again, I’m asking that you do so in a respectful way – don’t use this space to write comments you wouldn’t be comfortable writing on any of these blogs.

The fabulous Renee at Womanist Musings smacks down Ann Coulter. Renee’s partner is in the hospital; please keep her and her family in your thoughts.

Fucking While Feminist, With Jaclyn Friedman – A helpful discussion of what one does when one is the kind of person who uses the words “rape culture” on a first date.

A beautiful meditation on the buddha, the dharma, the sangha at flipfloppingjoy.

Amanda Palmer Behaves Like An Asshole, Part 37 (warning, graphic imagery) – Seriously, public figures, how hard is it not to offer flippant public comments that shit on marginalized populations, or on this country’s racial history and associated tensions in the name of “irony”?  (Tip: Watch Reality Bites – irony does not mean what you think it means.)  See also, and this too.

The last instalment of Latoya Peterson’s posts on Women of Colour and Wealth.

Goodbuytjane’s perspective on the Lady Gaga Telephone video.

Happy trails, folks!

Can I mention my blog, re:Cycling? You may have noticed our pingbacks a few times in your comments in the last couple of months.

We’re part of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. We write about all matters menstrual, biomedical and especially sociocultural. Recently, we’ve commented on the new Kotex campaign all the ladybloggers have been talking about, the role of menarche in The Runaways, menstrual tracking software for Orthodox Jewish women, and lots of other stuff.

I haz a blog. Today I wrote about how I’m feeling about moving in a couple of months, but generally it’s an odd mashup of food and politics. My alter-ego is Ernie Bufflo.

I’ve been stepping way out of my comfort zone by blogging about my chronic issues with RA. This entry was pretty cathartic:

Also, why do we rarely hear about women in math and science in school?

Can I mention a blog that’s not mine, but I commented on?

Leslie at Fatshionista has a moving piece up about “childhood obesity” from the perspective of a “formerly obese child”, in response to Michelle Obama’s “fight against childhood obesity”. Thus far, there are about 70 comments most of which say, “me too!” to the experience of growing up with fat stigmatization.

@Elizabeth: that tracking software is a great idea. Now maybe Orthodox women won’t have to take their underpants to the rabbi, a practice that makes me want to smack someone.

So, my partner in blogging, QueenGeorge, has a great piece on the idea of The Decent Guy–similar to the Nice Guy (TM).

And I, as my alter ego (MaryBullstonecraft), wrote a piece about the crappy disappointments of the American Health Care Remix

But also, the Amanda Palmer thing is *so* awful. I have nothing else to say about that.

Elizabeth, thanks for the link to the Centre! I had a look around and have bookmarked it for future reading.

    I don’t have a blog, but there’s one blog that I like a lot. It’s a blog project called “Beautiful Cervix” – http://www.beautifulcervix.com/welcome/

There’s pictures of women’s cervixes at different times of the month, of different ages, of different child bearing status.
