When I was visiting my parents during Christmastime last winter, I sat down at my dad’s desk to use his computer and found a scrap of paper on which he’d scribbled what appeared to be a list of his favorite things.
TV show: Law & Order
Music: classic rock
Life event: Sarah’s birth
And so on and so forth.
I don’t know whether it was an exercise from a book, a website, or a television show, but my heart melted. I pushed the paper aside, pretending I had not found it.
My dad is a wonderful man and I feel fortunate to have been born into his care. He and I don’t have a super intimate relationship, but he is a sensitive, gentle, kind and generous man and father. He is the rock of my family and it has always been a comfort to know that I have his love, support and encouragement.
Last time I saw him, I saw my grandfather’s face in his for the first time. As he gets older I am reminded of his mortality and dread the day I’ll lose him. If I could go anywhere this weekend I’d go to my parents’ house to watch an early Saturday morning Law & Order marathon with my dad. Happy Father’s Day.
