No time for a real, big-girl
post today, which is a shame, because there’s a lot to discuss in these two articles…
Anyway, if you have time, you should check out this discussion between Gail Collins and Stacy Schiff in the Times about using the term “feminist” and the Palinism “Mama Grizzly.” (Feel free to rant about her latest “cackle of rads” foolishness on Twitter.) I don’t know where they’re getting this “women in their 20s-30s-40s don’t ID as feminists” stuff, really.
The other thing is a book feature from the Guardian/Observer of Cordelia Fine’s forthcoming Delusions of Gender, which critiques what it refers to as the pseudo-science of “neurosexism,” or the idea that male and female brains are “hardwired” in variant, mutually exclusive ways. This book should totally be on your radar, and I’d love to get my hands on it, if I can find the time to read it once classes start up again.
Under “stuff NOT to read”: the comment threads. Especially to the latter article. There are a whole lot of people (mostly, but not all dudes) who will fight, not smartly, but to the death, to uphold every hoary gender stereotype out there.
