Beloved of film snobs for its Antonioni/Visconti-esque aesthetics, its beautiful visual style, and elegantly repressed emotion, and redeemed by being directed by an auteur, thus never associated with chick-lit, the &#039;woman thing&#039;. 

And you make a fine point: critics and feature writers are happy enough to discuss women&#039;s voyages of self-discovery on film as long as (a) they are marked by sexual trauma/mutilation (Von Trier) or (b) the woman is played by Juliette Binoche or Tilda Swinton.]]></description>
