An excellent post. I cringe every time someone -- especially women I look up to -- make a big deal about these ridiculous Facebook campaigns. Thank you for articulating this!

Hey, y'all, the Army of Women is a research initiative that seeks to match volunteers with various breast cancer research projects. It's open to everyone, and they're particularly interested in isolating causes of breast cancer. There's an emphasis on diversity (racial and otherwise) in research subjects. It's a great opportunity to actually do something, rather than merely being "aware." Info here: http://www.armyofwomen.org

I am wholly sympathetic to this campaign and commend the author on an eloquent and timely post.

However, the description of current scientific research does a disservice to the researchers, many of whom are genuinely uncovering lessons about both the fundamentals of cancer biology and possible treatments. For instance, the connection between night shifts and breast cancer risk seems to tie in with the hormonal regulation of circadian clocks, which may help develop a deeper understanding of cellular networks and their malfunctioning. It is certainly true that researchers have not yet made substantial progress towards "The Cure", but that doesn't mean current cancer research isn't obtaining meaningful findings -- it just means that there is still a lot of ground to be covered between the lab and the clinic.

I completely agree that presenting cancer research as a one-dimensional search for "The Cure" (as if there will ever be such a singular thing) is part of the problem. But this otherwise fantastic post should not be marred by criticism of scientific research which is genuinely meaningful.

As I often opine, a lot more could be done about social ills and disease if, instead of holding rallies and printing T-shirts with slogans, the money were just spent doing things.
