Are You Watching US Election Results?

Posted by BeckySharper in Thoughts, Cuteness, Things That Are Awesome on Nov 2, 2010, 9:40pm | 15 comments

I suggest you take a break to enjoy this video of Tazo the sea otter at the New York Aquarium. It is doing wonders for my blood pressure.

Can someone please explain to me how Rand Paul won an hour before polls closed?

My new Congressman, the sleazy, corrupt, disgusting Tim Griffin, better get ready for all the mail he’ll be getting from me during his term.

I am PISSED. Feingold is out in Wisconsin, and the foul Roy Blunt won the governor’s seat in MO.

    MOAR OTTERS, PLZ.

Otters are incredibly ridiculous – almost as cute as my Nacho! On a more somber note, I’m just praying they don’t begin groundless impeachment proceedings.

At this rate, I’m having a hard time deciding whether to support Jangling Pair Of Car Keys or Can Of Frosting as a Democratic primary challenger to Barack Obama in 2012.

    Gotta stay competitive…

Shit shit shit. Votes from largely republican precincts are coming in and Bennet and Buck are only 1% apart in CO. SHIT.

Just spent an hour talking to my mom about the results so far. She is flabbergasted that Russ Feingold lost (she’s in WI). She’s been very happy with him as a senator. He has visited each county each year to hold meetings with consituents. WI is more often blue than red, so it was depressing to see almost all the races there go Republican.

WA state results are going to take awhile… our ballots only had to be POSTMARKED by election day. Which means it will be at least several more days before the ballots pour in and get counted. So I was obsessing on my state-of-birth results.

In WA state, where we have both an extremely regressive tax system and severe local and state budget shortfalls, there was an initiative (I-1098) that would have put a small income tax on individuals making over $200K/year (and couples making over $400K/year). It has been rejected by approx. 65% of voters (so far). Even Bill Gates Sr. spoke out IN FAVOR of this initiative.

Another initiative (I-1053) which would require a 2/3′s majority in the state legislature to pass any tax increase (extraordinarily difficult to achieve) also appears to be passing handily.

In King County (Seattle) voters are also rejecting a small tax earmarked for some pretty basic social services. It was a sales (regressive) tax, but it was for pretty desperately needed monies…

Where do people think the money for schools and the most basic social services is going to come from? Arghhhhhhh….

Also, Senator Patty Murray appears to be winning her race, but it is really pretty much 50/50 right now and her challenger may demand a recount.

All these numbers aren’t completely unexpected, but… I was holding out hope for something a little better. The *extremely* close race between Murray and her competitor is a bit of a surprise, though…

    @Ms M – I’m bummed about Feingold, too… C’mon Badgers! :O(

This video is doing double duty for me. I am astounded at the idiocy in my current home state of Arizona (Reelecting Jan Brewer?? Srsly??). So I not only enjoy the adorable otter antics, but also the water. Sigh.
