“Don’t trust the police” has always been very very high on my list of Rape Prevention Tips. That’s why I didn’t report when I was raped.

Although I discovered yesterday that, legally I was not raped, because in the state of New York a person cannot withdraw consent during sexual intercourse. So it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

Every story I hear about rape victims being coerced, ignored, re-victimized, or slut-shamed is making me angrier and angrier. How can our society, any society, be so lackadaisical or dismissive about the violation of women and their rights? I want to walk up to every man I meet and smack him peremptorily, on the off chance he’s got it in his mind to rape some woman, somewhere. It makes me ashamed to be a man.
