This is a call to all New York/New Jersey/Connecticut Tri-state harpies: GET YOUR ASS OUT TO THE PROM.
Sure, the Prom is usually in May. Not this time.
The Dude and I had some quality karaoke time over the weekend with his Sister and her Mister. We were joined by Pandagon’s Amanda Marcotte and her righteous manpanion Marc Faletti, and they were totally psyched about next weekend’s Radical 80s Prom that is being run as a benefit for Women, Action, & the Media, an organization that you should know about (and support), if you don’t already.
The prom will be held at the Bowery Poetry Club in the East Village, from 10pm-2am, and will have live music, a costume contest, a relentless onslaught of John Hughes film clips, and happy, happy feminists. What’s not to like? $12 at the door (cheaper than seeing the new Harry Potter flick again!), and all for a good cause.
We’ve been planning on going for over a month, and yet neither the Dude or I has ourselves kitted out. Worst case scenario, he’ll pop his collar and I’ll wear bright, two-toned eye shadow, but we’re hoping for something a bit more festive. I don’t have the time (or the skills) to cobble together a new-wave dress like Andie Walsh, but maybe I’ll be able to dig up a banana clip or some dyed-to-match pumps at the Salvation Army.
Whatever we’ll be wearing, we’ll be there, and I hope you will be too. If you think you’ll make it, RSVP to the event’s Facebook page here. And let me know if you’re going!
