As the year winds down, there have been lists upon lists upon lists of the best books of 2010. It’s been a good reading year for me–I had many long-haul plane flights and lots of quality time on the subway, not to mention porch-sitting at the Harpy House and 10 days avoiding the cold in Germany last month. This past weekend I spent with Getting to Happy, Terry McMillan’s sequel to Waiting to Exhale. It’s is the best thing she’s written since How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I had a serious nostalgia trip rejoining those characters, who were as seminal in their own way as Carrie & Company on “SATC.”
Here are my other favorite books I read this year, in no particular order:
The Bread of Angels by Stephanie Saldaña
Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
To the End of the Land by David Grossman
One Day by David Nicholls
2 States by Chetan Bhagat
Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
Next week, when I go back to Virginia for Christmas, I’ll be reading Some Sing, Some Cry by Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayeza, which I deliberately set aside for vacation so I’d have time for all 600+ pages!
