We’re just past the holiday noshing season, but (here in the Northern Hemisphere) we’re smack dab in the middle of the delicious warm-comfort-food-eating season. It’s time for carbs and savory treats and things made with brown sugar and nuts.
Soups. Chili. Gratins. Roasted things (veg or meat, whatever you like). Good maude I talk about food all the damn time, don’t I? Well, today is a leeetle different, because I’m not interested in completed dishes or your favorite cookie recipe (…maybe some other time). Instead, I wanna know what your favorite seasoning is. What do you put in everything? Not salt and pepper, of course, those are defaults.
Is it an herb? a blend? a sauce? I certainly know people who buy sriracha by the gallon, believe that everything’s better with basil, or put curry powder in their cheerios. And I’m pretty sure I know what BeckySharper’s is. Mine? Is vinegar. Any and all kinds (I have 8 types in my cupboard right now: white, tarragon-infused, cider, malt, red wine, mirin, chinese rice wine, and balsamic). I love savory-tangy flavors, and just a little bit in a soup, sprinkled over veggies, combined in a marinade, dip, or glaze makes everything better. I even–seriously–have been known drink a little vinegar shooter from time to time, I love it so much. I’m crazy about mustard, too, largely because its so vinegar-licious.
What I’m saying is I. LOVE. VINEGAR.
So, what do you love? For today’s FFT, rummage through your mental pantry and tell us what your go-to seasoning is, and maybe what unconventional ways you use it.
