Sorry this is so late, but I was only able to score a copy of Dear John just now, though I've been wanting to read it for a while. I really liked Lisa Diamond's Sexual Fluidity, but was ultimately disappointed in Dear John, for the same set of reasons you presented here: the uneven writing and especially the lack of diversity. From what I cold tell, It was overwhelmingly middle-to-upper-middle class. I would have loved to have seen some working-class women's experiences with coming out.

I haven't reviewed it yet, but I loved this book. The writing was a lot higher quality than I was expecting, and I loved the variety of experiences.
