I’ll be starting my profiles/opinions on the party leaders and parties next week, but I thought I’d tide you over with some helpful links courtesy of (mostly) the CBC! They have some really good coverage going on, so I recommend it.
- A Liberal candidate in Alberta has apologized for comments he made in regards to “different degrees of sexual assault” needing different degrees of punishment, yet remains a Liberal candidate. What?! Rape isn’t taken seriously by Liberals too?! Noooooooo……
- After calls on why Harper has been screening his campaign events, he also has apologized. Doesn’t mean much since he is also screening the media.
- Tories have also released their platform. Blah blah families blah blah businesses blah tough on crime blah blah eliminating deficit THEY caused blagity blah….
- Of course, this was after The Liberals unveiled their platform, using the ‘Red Book’ tactic that former PM Jean Chretien used. I looks awfully NDP in terms of content.
- Not one to ever be silent about anything, Gen. Rick Hillier thinks a debate about Libya would liven a ‘boring’ campaign.
- The theme of the NDP’s pitch is helping seniors and improving healthcare, one promise is to help family caregivers.
- Vote Mobs. Love it. Proof the youth DO care (though they’ll stop if the government insists on not listening to them).
- Last, but certainly not least in my books, Arcade Fire? Totes don’t want you to vote for the Conservative Party.

Ha ha, The Arcade Fire? So awesome.
I’m glad that the federal Liberal party (i.e. Ignatieff) has condemned Reilly’s remarks, though I find the language being used all around (including by the Conservatives, also condemning the remarks) to be a bit wishy-washy. I would probably throw my hat in unreservedly with any party who really indicated they were taking a strong stance against minimizing sexual assault.
I haven’t been able to find exactly what he said, but Canada does have different degrees of sexual assault in the criminal code, which carry different sentences. Is Aggravated sexual assault really not more serious than Invitation to Sexual Touching?
Stephen Harper doesn’t want YOU to vote
Liberals turf racist candidate but not the sexist one
You forget – he’s a liberal candidate IN ALBERTA. (I live there) (not in his riding)
Our “Liberal” candidate one election was anti-Kyoto, anti-gun control, anti-womens reproductive freedom… but SLIGHTLY more left leaning on the arts than the conservative candidate.
The liberals don’t take Alberta seriously since they believe that most people will automatically vote conservative… if they would field decent candidates, they might be pleasantly surprised.
The Globe and Mail has a thoughtful article on crime, now that Harper has decided to make it an election issue: What are Canadians really afraid of when it comes to crime?
I think it gives a fairly accurate view of how (middle-class, mostly white) Canadians see crime. Also, holy shit American incarceration rate.
Not a news link, however, well worth the read. The major changes to Canada under the Conservative rule. And by Conservative rule I mean The Harper Government.

Update: The Liberals wanted to dump the racist guy, but he refuses to step down and it is too late for the party to remove his name from the ballot.
