I’m going to be very honest here. I have bias. I am biased. If you’re looking for non partisan info on this guy and the party, you’re not going
to find it here. The Conservative Party of Canada is basically like the Republicans of Canada (with slightly less wtf, mostly because it’s a minority government). They’ve been running the country with two consecutive minority governments. Now, while every party this year says they stand for “family values” they all seem to mean different values. Conservatives are running on the old school “family values”.
Their members are predominantly pro-life, anti-gun registry, pro oil sands and fairly anti women. You need not look further than that whole “women are a left wing fringe group” debacle for that last one. One look at the general outline of the platform and you see the usuals…tough on crime, eliminating the deficit (that they caused), tax cut for families, yadda yadda. But considering the corporate tax cuts he has made and that the tax cut he promised wouldn’t even take effect for years…..kinda useless. Not to mention that there hasn’t been much about healthcare. Don’t get me wrong, I love not paying for healthcare, but the system needs fixing and better funding. But you know what he wants to spend money on according to that link? Defending the fucking arctic. Wow.
If that’s not enough, he’s getting tips from politicians South of the border on how to do attack ads (which you can see on their site), and has been airing them well before the election. He’s also using the “coalition” scare tactic, even though he was not exactly opposed to them as minority leader. He also calls the possibility of leadership under another candidate “reckless” and “dangerous”. Well…..here are some highlights!
- Only 5 questions a day from media?
- Party members, media and groups muzzled if they don’t go with everything he says?
- Deficit?
- Shady election practices?
- Standing by a cabinet minister who fudged a document?
- Founding Principles that basically sound like “BOOTSTRAPS!” and protectionism?
- Support of the oil sands, one of the worst environmental facepalms in the world, from the ENVIRONMENT Minister?
- Pro-life politicians wanting to affect women’s rights?
- In contempt of Parliament?
Oh yeah, that sounds so awesome, like a Canada I totally want to be a part of!
…..I just puked a little in my mouth…..
They only need 14 more seats to get a majority, and I pray that it doesn’t happen. Now, my dream is not likely to happen, but I can stand another minority and a coalition taking place, because there’s only so much Harper one can take.

I admit I hope you guys guinea pig cost control on your single payer system before we institute it so we can copy your methodology if it works. From what I understand, none of the Western countries with public health care really have the whole cost control thing down, and it’s starting to get worrisome. Of course, by the time we get single payer, I’ll probably be enjoying Medicare…maybe.
I know it’s selfish, but I’m glad to hear even Canada’s politics aren’t perfect – it makes me feel less bad about my countries’ politicians.
Can I just vent for a minute about the coalition thing? I really don’t get what is so difficult about the concept. You know, compromise and whatnot. Other countries (Germany, that I know of first-hand) do it all the time and do very well.
Of course, the current UK coalition is a clusterfuck, but that’s because the LibDems have basically let the Tories turn them into their whipping boys in exchange for just the tiniest taste of power and a chance at getting an alternative voting system.

It doesn’t cover everything the Conservatives had done that’s wrong, but it gives folks a taste.
Oh yeah, am I biased. I can not, for the life of me, understand why anyone would vote for the Conservatives at this point. And I grew up in a rural riding that always votes strongly Conservative. IT BREAKS MY MIND.
BearDownCBears: Just take heart in the fact that while our public systems are struggling with cost controls, we still pay less per person than the US does per person for its public system (Medicare/Medicaid). By a lot – in 2004 the US paid double what the next highest country did in per person parity dollars.
I don’t have the most recent OECD data (I collected this mostly between 2004 and 2007), but I’d be surprised if it had suddenly changed.
Oh, and Women are breaking up with Harper
There are several webisodes of this and everyone is encouraged to make their own video.

This is a public service announcement from your bossy southern neighbor.
