I have not followed the intricacies of this case, but I was under the impression that not all of the six women Weiner contacted were exactly “consenting,” right? The one in Seattle, I think, neither solicited a picture of his cock nor responded positively when it came (heh).

If that’s the case, for me that makes Weiner’s actions a lot nastier. If it’s just a guy talking dirty with a porn star and then lying about it, OK, but if he escalated harmless flirting to genitalia photos, there’s little difference between what he did and the friendly guy next to you in the subway who seems perfectly nice until he lifts the magazine on his lap to show you what’s underneath.

I think he needs to resign, not for moral consistency reasons but for financial ones: older people donate more money to political parties, and they also (presumably) take a dimmer view of politicians sending pictures of their cocks to 21 year old women. My parents, for example, have voted for every Democratic Presidential candidate since JFK, and they are incensed about Weiner to the point where discussion is impossible.

Chances that the Dems would lose his seat if he resigned are slim, but for God’s sake. We just cannot afford this kind of idiocy.

I wonder how many times this will have to happen before we don’t care any more. Pretty soon 99.99% of American adults will have something embarrassing about them somewhere in cyberspace.

You make excellent points above! I wonder also of: 1.) As Jewish (particularly) men – we are often taught – “intellect + drive + work hard” – ala Weiner and not taught to deal with our feelings, 2.) Being “intelligent” and an overachiever – most anyone – IF they learn that they can get away with things through their intellect, can push boundaries – until reality stops them, 3.) Particularly as Men – but with some women also some of us learn we have “entitlement” in general – and “grab, grab, grab” – others may learn the opposite and be disempowered (e.g. “I’m Not good enough/ pretty enough/ strong enough, etc.) Thanks!
