Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire;
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

I used to use that one in lessons when I taught English in France. Love it!
This is my very favorite poem of all time. It also appears in my very favorite book of all time, Disturbances in the Field, by Lynn Sharon Schwartz. It’s a wonderful, heart-wrenching book about a woman trying to get through a terrible tragedy without losing her sense of self–I highly recommend it.
