Matt Damon Defends Teachers (Or OH SNAP! FUCK YEAH MATT DAMON!)

Posted by BeckySharper in Thoughts, Activism, Anger, Assweasels, Education, Things That Are Awesome, Unexpected Consequences on Aug 2, 2011, 7:29pm | 8 comments

Marie Anelle and I were enthusing about this video earlier. It’s from this weekend’s Save Our Schools rally in Washington DC. Witness the fashionably shorn Matt Damon pwn both a reporter and a cameraman who try to insult teachers—all as his mother, a teacher, looks on proudly. As the daughter, sister, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of teachers, it makes me quiver with joy. Bonus kudos to Matt for being perhaps the only celebrity to correctly and effectively use the term “inherently paternalistic” in an off-the-cuff response.

Way to go. For all of us who work for “shitty pay” and (despite what many people seem to think) work very long hours under frequently miserable conditions. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

It’s actually fairly horrifying to me that that woman was honestly advocating deliberate job insecurity as a means of driving labor to greater productivity. That’s the kind of economic argument that we should have grown out of a century ago. Thanks, Henrietta Clay Frick.

I just watched another 6k people be coerced into early retirement/be laid off today at Cisco — the corporate world is entirely functioning on this rationale — including the 10% should go every year theory. It sucks … I didn’t get laid off this time, but did two layoffs ago. Now working part of my old job as a contractor with no benefits (trade off for me is getting to work part time, esp. since I telecommute and keep my standard of living pretty close to the ground).

Those who can’t write, report; and those who can’t report, report for Reason.

@MA – definitely! What’s not to like, a high profile advocating on behalf of an occupation/profession that receives not much recognition and pay for performing such an important function in the community. ‘that’s hot’.
