I suppose an after-effect of such an action-packed few years would be that smaller issues or problems would seem so shockingly trivial, and the temptation to be a “dislikable, impatient, cranky woman” would be overwhelming. It’s rare that a male war hero is routinely discussed as being a bit of a prick – just because Nancy Wake was a person with person-ly flaws doesn’t make her less of a hero/ine.

Her life story and news of her death have been all over the news in Australia. I heard several interviews with Peter FitzSimons and other historians who emphasised overall what a dislikable, impatient, cranky woman she was. You go, Nancy Wake. We need more unapologetic bitches who are great at their jobs. !

I love the novel Charlotte Gray and had no idea it was based on her life. What an amazing woman. Anyone who kills a Gestapo officer with her bare hands should be commemorated loudly and frequently!
