Last year I had a female Saudi student in the law school class I taught in the U.S. She was allowed to go to law school in Saudi Arabia, but she was not allowed to go into court or engage in the clerkships that allowed you to qualify to be a lawyer. This is perhaps another example of how they stage womens rights. I was so excited that she learned to drive when she was here and she was so excited when she actually got to go into a US court to watch a hearing!

@rodriguez: Well, the Post had an article today reporting that there is a growing militant movement around the periphery of the country, and it's trying to pick up support. Reportedly there are growing defections, especially from the 90% or so of the troops who are Sunni. Nobody expects it to be an overnight success, however.) Although it was enormously useful in voicing grievances and destablilizing control of he country, the protest movement seems to have stalled as the regime digs in and kills people day after day. The Alawite elites in the military aren't going to defect on principle like the Egyptian army, so I think the choice is either some sort of civil war or a denouement in the style of Iran.

I mean, is it so far-fetched? All this crazy stuff that's happened since last December was unthinkable a year ago. And as the Arab Spring has progressed, other sovereigns have shifted their policies - see Jordan, Morocco, others.

If other Arab leaders witness a growing armed insurgency in Syria gain enough momentum and cause enough military defections so that the Assad regime either flees the country or is slaughtered horribly, I wonder if timelines and policies might look different in a year.
