Hanna and I took advantage of the three-day weekend to block off some stay-at-home vacation/couple time this week. We’re both trying to take a break from blogging and the internets (going cold turkey appears to be impossible between work and socializing these days) and so I have no Feminism For Real installment for you think week, or a second post on Thursday. I’ll be back as usual on the 18th. In the meantime, I hope you all are finding small ways to enjoy the autumn. What are your favorite things about the season? Do you and/or your kids have plans for Halloween? What are the signs of the approaching cold weather where you are?

Picking apples (Harvard, Mass.)1 October 2008

Fall to me is always exciting because it brings…HoneyCrisp apples. My favorite apple EVAR! It may be pouring rain and dark outside (Pacific NW), but I’ve got some juicy crispy apples.
Mmmm..honeycrisp apples! Best eating apple EVER (not good for cooking, though).
I enjoy apples and winter squash and cooler weather. Not standing and shvitzing on a 110 degree subway platform is nice. I also look forward to the Jewish High Holidays and their rituals of reflection and renewal.
Honeycrisps FTW! Cornell Orchards sells some that are grown right here in campus. OM NOM NOM!
Back in Northern California we usually got an extended Indian Summer, but I really liked the return of the rain, usually in late September or early October. Here in Ithaca we get some great fall color, and it seems like we get some nice sunny days in September/October and a bit of a break from the rain.
Have a relaxing and peaceful break, Anna!
Second on the High Holy days. As I grow older, I miss the heat of summer more than I used to, but fall in Pittsburgh is so lovely that I don’t mind the chill.
I love Halloween-when I worked in the bookstore I wore my HP rig to work and gave out candy during the business district’s trick or treat. I do think, though, that the grownups are kind of taking it over and messing it up. We don’t need to put up major house decorations a month beforehand. Let the kids be kids.
I’m looking forward to spending a few autumn days in NYC and Boston!
I plan to bike as much as possible here in Massachusetts. The weather is just perfect and the leaves changing color is simply sublime.
