Wow!!! That was so very well put together. I also believe if you can't afford to feed a child and fully take care of it than you should terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible. There is no shame in choosing to wait to give your child a life outside of poverty!!! You also shed a lot of light on the whole partial birth abortion thing. We as human beings do have the free will to choose how our lives are orchestrated and the most appropriate way to heal or come to terms with ending a pregnancy. 8 weeks for me medical abortion tomorrow! Not so nervous any more. Thank you!

I think we should allow video surveillance of the typical day at an abortion clinic.
From the protesters outside (close up of the bloody hand posters)
To the waiting room, pre abortive counseling sessions, procedure room, recovery room, and how protesters treat those after they leave the clinic.
If we make it legal to video tape an abortion facility (with the patients permission to be included, of course) very very few people would ever believe the pro forced birthers again.

I just love you for doing this.

I had an assisted "illegal" abortion in the mid-nineties when the shit was hitting the fan at clinics here in the US. It was illegal because, unlike home birth, at home suction aspiration abortions are not legal, which is sad...they should be (we know have the pain meds OTC to deal with the intense cramping). We should have this option.

Anyway, I chose to do this, as regressive as a DIY abortion seems to be, because I didn't feel like running the gauntlet at the local clinic, so I did it at home. It was painful, and I much prefer pain medication, but overall, it was an straightforward emotional experience, and, best of all it was free.

I too was called upon to dispose of my fetal tissue and yup. It basically looks like most of my periods.

This experience informs my attitude towards the now-iconic "bloody fetal parts" pictures that litter the anti choice landscape. I look at them and think (almost in this order " that's photo-shopped-that's not what MY abortion looked like!"

The hang up over the images has always puzzled me- I don't really care if it has tiny little hands. That's not the point. Who was the women? What was happening with her? If she had to have a second trimester abortion, why? Lack of access? Fetal development that jumped the track?

The big picture is missing in the images, and all we're left with is body parts and no real story.

Anyway. THANK YOU.

@MA - I'm glad that things have gone smoothly for you! And for sharing the medical abortion with the harpy community.

I don't see what was happening in pre-1960s as a tangent. This is a very real danger if family planning/sexual health (with all options! regardless of relationship status, sexuality, gender, etc) is treated as a political football.

I can only hope that women pull together, and put an end to anti-choice family planning and sexual health options.

As an aside, I walked past the family planning clinic where sometimes there is the one-women-anti-choice-troll outside the front with her placards and banners. In a loud voice I once again said (there were some women who were standing on the otherside of the street, looking somewhat timid) "I trust women to make their own choices, and it's not for you to judge". Anti-choice troll followed me up the hill a bit to say how I was going to burn in hell etc etc. I hope if anyone needed to get inside the family planning clinic did so without the judgement eyes of this anti-choice-troll.

This blogging left me terribly distressed and I am not sure why. I suspect it is because it brought back awful memories of rushing my roomie to the hospital new student week of freshman year following an abortion performed by a Chicago policeman on her kitchen table. Those times are not so far in the past. For those of us who have daughters we pray "never again."

Thanks for being so honest and sharing! Love love love the myth busting! I volunteer on the Canadians for Choice Access Line (24/7 sexual and reproductive health hotline), and people call all the time with many questions about unplanned pregnancy options, and abortion. Your posts have helped me to connect more with the voices on the phone and be the best resource and support I can be (usually in 10 mins or less!).
