Glad y'all are liking the David Simon quote. If you've never read The Corner or Homicide , they are both absolutely amazing. I would read David Simon's grocery list, he's such a great writer. And his moral outrage about racism and the dysfunction of our cities and our political system never fails to hit home.

WHY do so many dudes (mostly white and well to do) feel the need to write about minority experience, when they know shit about it?

Everything in his article smacks of privilege with blinders on. What a douchecanoe. I think he should go find some poor black kid and ask the kid about life and then publish the kid’s experience as the article?

I’m a white lady, but I have something to say to people I easily could have thrown in jail. Even if you’re not a white lady like me, you should listen up. I’ll talk like I think a football coach talks, even though I’ve never been on a football team.

I believe that you, like me, can make an assertion. You can make it if you write in short sentences. Phrases, even. Using a hackneyed declamatory style. Anyone can do it, if you just try hard enough. Talk loudly. Talk right out of your asshole, no matter how impossible that seems. Your asshole is free! Use it!

And that assertion can be terrible. It can be a bag of garbage and cheese-farts. But if you say it the right way, in the right publication, then you too can get paid. Dolla dolla bills, yo.
