Thanks so much for all the kind thoughts. Just to update everyone: her surgery is in two weeks. She will undergo a double mastectomy. There is a chance she might be able to avoid chemotherapy, but we won't know until after the operation. But she is as strong as ever, and her biggest concern seems to be that someone is around to play with her puppy. I think we can find a few volunteers for that.

Thank you for your post, Not Mr. Big. Sending you and your mother good wishes for a strong immune system and strength and luck. My mother-in-law came had thyroid cancer twice and uterine cancer. Thyroid cancer, if caught in time, is easily treatable and nothing like breast cancer. But we had similar fears about the number of hits she had already taken. So far, 6 years later, she's strong and healthy, and actually in better shape now that she has been diagnosed with diabetes and is taking terrific care of herself.
I hope beyond hope that your mother's body and spirit remain just as incredibly strong as you have already described them.

I'm so sorry your family has to go through this again. I understand your fear, but I also know that lots of people survive recurrences. Sometimes more than once.

I am one of those people who sometimes gets resentful of all the hype about breast cancer, even though I lost my own godmother to it. All kinds of cancer are awful, after all. And my own family history is with colo-rectal cancer. Now there's a cancer that no one talks about! It's good (in a terrible way) to remember that breast cancer affects real people - it's not just about pink and those yogurt cups and catchy slogans about boobs.

Thank you for sharing this with us. My partner of 8 years was diagnosed with chronic leukemia this summer. I wish I knew some magic words to make your burden lighter but of course I don't. I do hope you know how lucky your mother is to have your love and support and also hope that you don't neglect your well-being be it physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. Hugs to You!!
