glad you got back safely Becky, and you had lots of fun with your family!
Not a fan of schnitzel and other similar kinds of bland, heavy meat and potato kind of means of central/eastern european foods. (I am betraying parts of my heritage when I write that!)
Though one thing that I did love to eat when I was younger is "pirags" (though not the bacon ones)..

Sounds like you had a great trip! I was in Bratislava and Vienna several years ago and loved both cities, although I don't think I'd actually like to live in either of them long-term... (Bratislava because it's a bit smaller than my ideal - although I live in a tiny city now - and, Vienna because it's a bit too staid and old).

I would take the cheese off that sandwich and eat it, but with the white bread and all that it looks pretty disgusting. Deep-fried Camembert (if that is what kind of cheese it is?) is pretty amazing with berry sauces (e.g. lingonberry, redcurrant...).

Vienna is amazing! I went in 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed a whole week there - including watching the training at the Spanish Riding School (Hi Es!) which, if I'm honest was better than the actual performance (geek alert). I also really enjoyed the Freud Museum, the royal palace, the public parks, the markets, the trip to the underground caves, the trip to the abbey and, of course, the cake shops! I'd love to go again - if I did. I'd like to tour the parliament, and perhaps the UN building and I'd go and watch the SRS train at least twice!

I'm so jealous of your Spanish Riding School tour! When I eventually make it to Vienna (and I'm in the UK, so that is more a matter of getting off my backside and organising than anything else) I want to go and see them training - you canget tickets to watch that as well as the actual performance.

I spent some time (e.g., a week) in the Czech Republic--they sell it at little food carts and the like--like the hot dog or coffee stands you see in New York. It's pretty tasty at the local places, especially if you can figure out how to tell them to leave off the mayo/tartar sauce. (That was hit or miss). I am not quite sure how we figured out what it was--maybe a throwaway comment in our copy of Let's Go Europe?

OMG, FashionablyEvil, did you know that or are you just a better Google-r than me? Have you eaten one of these things?

Pleased to see that I was right about what it is. Still not sure I want to eat it. Not that I'm opposed to fried cheese...it's more the combo of fried cheese with tartar sauce + soft white hamburger bun. Maybe if I deconstructed the thing and just ate the fried cheese.

Numerous Google attempts have failed to explain what exactly this is. Oozing fried cheese croquette with tartar sauce is my best guess.

That's what it is: smazeny syr.
